L'auteur, Charles Louis Arthur Barreswill (1817-1870), était un chimiste, collaborateur et ami de jeunesse de Claude Bernard. Dans la seconde moitié de sa carrière, il s'éloigna de la chimie physiologique et étudia surtout les applications industrielles de la chimie, notamment concernant le textile. A ce titre, il co-rédigea un Dictionnaire de chimie industrielle (1861-1864). Ausgabe von 1860). - Seltene erste Ausgabe des ersten umfassenden Handbuchs über die chemischen Prozesse in der Photographie. - Barreswil und Davanne beschreiben alle damals bekannten Verfahren, die photographische Nachahmung von Banknoten und Wertpapieren und hier zum ersten Mal auch die von ihnen entwickelte Lithophotographie. "Von den wenigen Erfindern, denen Halbtonbilder gelangen, waren die ersten die Chemiker Barreswil und Davanne, die in Kooperation mit dem Optiker Lerebours und dem Lithographen Joseph Lemercier arbeiteten. Im Jahre 1852 griffen sie das Asphaltverfahren von Joseph Nicéphore Niépce wieder auf, ersetzten die Metallplatte durch körnigen Lithographenstein, den sie nicht mit Lavendelöl, sondern mit Asphaltätherlösung überzogen. Nach Belichtung unter dem Negativ wurde Äther als Lösemittel verwendet. Der Stein wurde sodann geätzt und eingefärbt. Die Partien, an denen der durch lichteinwirkung unlösliche Asphalt die Einwirkung der Säure verhindert hatte nahmen die Farbe an. 1854 publizierte Lemercier unter dem Titel "Lithophotographie" die ersten sechs Drucke, jeder 33 x 23 cm groß, . Die Drucke wiesen durchaus gute Halbtonwerte auf, doch wurde das Verfahren später zugunsten desjenigen von Poitevin aufgegeben, da man nur kleine Auflagen drucken konnte" (H. Gernsheim). - Zu L. C.
