He would be most obliged if the recpient could help Madame Bouvier's letter reach its destination.

Royer-Collard et peut-être serez vous surpris que je me croie fondé à vous adresser une recommandation ayant si peu l'avantage d'être connu de vous. Nous avons depuis un an ici un missionnaire français qui s'appelle l'abbé Chargros. C'est un ancien sous-lieutenant de la garde impériale, qui, depuis 15 ans, s'est pris d'un autre zèle et d'un autre courage et s'est enrôlé dans les missions étrangères. Il a presque constamment dès lors vécu dans l'Orient. L'incendie de Pera [quartier d'Istanbul] a détruit un collège où il était attaché. Il est revenu en Europe, fort embarrassé de sa personne et regrettant ses habitudes de Naxos [île de la mer Egée] et de Constantinople. Il voudrait aller à Alger, mais point à l'aventure et sans avoir la certitude d'y être employé soit dans l'instruction publique soit dans des fonctions ecclésiastiques. L'abbé Jean-Baptiste-Edmond Chargros (1792-1865), prêtre lazariste était donc entre l'île de Naxos, où il dirigea la maison de Naxie, et ce collège d'Istanbul qui a brûlé. En 1840, on le retrouve dans le diocèse d'Avignon où il est aumônier du château et curé de Saint-Pierre-des-Boimeaux. Il crée alors un « Institut agricole de la Basse-Camargue » afin d'élever les orphelins. Il sera aussi en correspondance avec Marie Capelle plus connue sous son nom d'épouse, Marie Lafarge. Emprisonnée à Montpellier, elle fut vraisemblablement recommandée à l'abbé Chargros par l'abbé Coural, ancien aumônier de la prison. [110].
