A Cherokee folktale with phonetics in the Kituwah dialect designed to promote fluency in the Cherokee language. Sponsored through the Eastern Cherokee Language Project. At the time of European contact, there were three major dialects of Cherokee language: Lower, Middle, and Overhill. The Lower dialect has been extinct for over 200 years. Of the remaining two dialects, the Middle dialect (Kituwah) is spoken by the Eastern band on the Qualla Boundary, and retains 1,000 speakers or fewer. The Overhill, or Western, dialect is spoken in eastern Oklahoma and by the Snowbird Community in North Carolina by an estimated 9,000 people or more. This book represents the second book in a series written to promote the Kituhwa dialect and the last developed with the collaboration of Robert H. Bushyhead (1914-2001), a Kituhwa Cherokee. The Eastern Cherokee Language Project believes through sharing family stories and publishing the old oral teachings, the sacred speech of the old people will survive. An appendix describes cultural background of the foods, animals, colors and names used in the story along with bibliographic information. A glossary (phonetic/English/Cherokee) is included. This copy is inscribed (in both English & Cherokee) by the author/translator Kay Thorpe Bannon, who has worked with this project since 1989. This is also the first book illustrated by the award winning Cherokee artist Revina Sneed. Foreword by Joseph Bruchac, a noted writer of books relating to the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, with a particular focus on northeastern Native American and Anglo-American lives and folklore. Oversized booklet (softcover with stapled binding) is in near fine condition.
