In anschaulichen Formulierungen stellt Bang die Bedeutung der Lipoide für lebende Zellen, Enzyme und Eiweiße dar und liefert so ein umfassendes Standardwerk mit dem gesammelten Wissen seiner Zeit. Der Autor: Ivar Christian Bang (geb. 1869 in Gran/Norwegen, gest. 1918 in Lund/Schweden), Dr. med., war Professor der medizinischen und physiologischen Chemie an der Universität Lund (Schweden). Bang entwickelte wegweisende Methoden im Bereich der Blutuntersuchungen, u.a. im Jahre 1908 das erste zuverlässige und routinemäßig anwendbare Blutzuckermessverfahren. This research was a major factor in revealing the framework of the nucleotides. He also performed early work on fat, protein, and nitrogen metabolism, so that he coincidentally developed methods useful to clinical chemistry as he demonstrated "normal" and "abnormal" (disease) chemical processes of the body."
