Azor Hoyt, the writer of the diary, was born 13 September, 1770 in Fairfield PArish, near Stamford, Connecticut. His parents were James and Mary Ann (Belden) Hoyt. Shortly after the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1776 the family of Azor Hoyt and his brother James fled Connecticut to join other fleeing Loyalists on Long Island. They lived in exile on Long Island for six years until the spring of 1783 when they, with many friends and relatives from STamford, removed to ST. John, Nova Scotia (later New Brunswick).
