Soft cover. Condición: Poor. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Complete. Ariel Poem was a series originally commissioned by T S Elliot with a number of aims: to publish an unpublished poem by a major poet with commissioned artwork from a leading artist, with a Christmas theme. These were intended to be an alternative to Christmas cards. However, these pamphlets, with the contents sewn, are still utterly charming and really rather lovely. This edition is from Louis Macneice. The covers have wear, and the thread is broken. The pages have evidence of contented use. The pages though are benign, clean and clear and sure. The coloured painting by Michael Ayrton is dramatic and visceral. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.…

Ayrton produced one of his "fine book covers" (Horne, p. 83) for the Faber & Faber paperback edition of The Lord of the Flies in 1973. In contrast with the original boys cavorting on a sunny tropical island, Ayrton chose to concentrate on the nightmare of the pig's head from chapter eight ("Gift for the Darkness"). This is a study for that design. Michael Ayrton (1921-1975) enjoyed a varied career, including theatre design (Gielgud's Macbeth in 1942), sculpture (with Henry Moore as his mentor), and writing. "He was one of the most cerebral and literary figures ever to have worked in Britain and his performances as writer and artist are of roughly equal stature" (Horne, p. 83). "Faber initially marketed Golding's novel as a guileless supplement to [the] tradition [of The Coral Island]. On the cover for the first edition the boys explore a tropical forest of fronds and creepers that is not at all threatening. Gradually, successive editions came clean about the book's diabolism. In Michael Ayrton's 1974 [sic] design, the head of the sacrificed beast suggests a slavering werewolf on to which a pig's snout has been grafted" (Conrad). Peter Conrad, "Lord of the Flies: can you judge a book by its cover?", The Guardian, 17 September 2011; Alan Horne, Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, 1994. Original drawing (195 x 122 mm) on wove paper (254 x 276 mm). Drawn in ink, watercolour, and crayon, unsigned. Mounted, framed and glazed (framed size: 381 x 302 mm). Trace of toning to paper, but fine and unfaded.…
