Artist Gordon King's original artwork for this 'colourful and stimulating introduction to Shakespeare's England' from the 1970s comprising 10 surprisingly powerful pieces in a mixture of watercolour, oil and acrylics which portray a performance at the Globe Theatre, figures from Elizabethan life and a large idealised depiction of a performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream in an English village. The artwork is executed on Colyer and Southey CS10 line board, protected by cover sheets, marked up and labelled by Gordon King for the publisher and printer and in bright, fine condition. Alongside King's artwork is the 1973 first edition hard back copy of One Day in Shakespeare's England in which all the artwork was printed alongside reproductions of photographs and Elizabethan documents. This copy has been elaborately marked up and annotated by hand throughout seemingly by the publisher in preparation for a reprint. Gordon King (1939-2022) was highly regarded for his book illustrations, born in Fife and trained at Carlton Studios and Reading University, settling in Buckinghamshire where he moved away from illustrative work from the 1980s onwards. The collection comprises: DUSTJACKET ARTWORK: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM PERFORMED IN AN ENGLISH VILLAGE: artwork in ink, oils and acrylics measuring 95 cm x 44 cm created to be printed as the dust jacket illustration on One Day in Shakespeare's England. Artist's notes on cover sheet read 'Reduce 1/5'. In very good condition, colours remaining vibrant.
