Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 40 pages. 173 x 125 mm. Libraries worldwide that own item: 11. Anti-Semitic pamphlet. Published by William Dudley Pelley, head of the Silver Shirts, a pro fascist group in the United States in the 1930s. William Dudley Pelley (March 12, 1890 - June 30, 1965) was an American extremist and spiritualist who founded the anti-semitic Silver Legion in 1933 and ran for President in 1936 for the Christian Party. Pelley became a journalist and gained respect for his writing skills, his articles eventually appeared in national publications. Two of his short stories received O. Henry awards, "The Face in the Window" in 1920, and "The Continental Angle" in 1930. Following World War I, Pelley traveled throughout Europe and Asia as a foreign correspondent, spent time in Russia and witnessed atrocities during the Russian Civil War. He developed a deep hatred for Communism and Jews, whom he believed were planning to conquer the world. Returning to the U.S. in 1920, he worked as a Hollywood screenwriter and wrote 2 Lon Chaney films, The Light in the Dark (1922) and The Shock (1923). By 1929 he became disillusioned with the film industry, and moved to Asheville, North Carolina. In 1928, Pelley said he had a near-death experience, detailed in an article for American Magazine called "My Seven Minutes in Eternity." In later writings, he wrote that during this event, he met with God and Jesus Christ, who instructed him to undertake the spiritual transformation of America. He claimed he was able to levitate and see through walls. When the Great Depression struck he became active in politics, moved to Asheville, founded Galahad College and Galahad Press. When, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on 1/30/1933 Pelley, an admirer of Hitler, founded the Silver Legion, an extremist and antisemitic organization whose followers, known as the Silver Shirts and Christian Patriots, wore Nazi-like silver uniforms. Biographer Scott Beekman notes that Pelley was "one of the first Americans to create an organization celebrating the work of Adolf Hitler." He founded chapters of the Silver Legion in almost every state of the union and gained many followers. He held mass rallies, lectures, and public speeches country wide promoting anti-Communism, antisemitism, racism, jingoism, isolationism and pyramidology. He opposed Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal, founded the Christian Party and ran as its candidate for president in 1936. Pelley engaged in a long dispute with the United States House of Representatives' Dies Committee, predecessor to the House Un-American Activities Committee. In 1940, federal marshals raided Pelley's Asheville headquarters, with his followers there arrested, and his property seized. Despite serious financial and material setbacks to his organization resulting from lengthy court battles, he continued to oppose FDR, accusing him of being a warmonger. The attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 led Pelley to disband the Silver Legion, but claimed that the devastation of the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor was worse than the government claimed. In 1942 he was charged with treason and sedition and found guilty of sedition, obstructing military recruiting and fomenting insurrection within the military. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was paroled after 8 years. In his final years, Pelley dealt with charges of securities fraud that had been brought against him while he had lived in Asheville, North Carolina. …

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. On offer is a compelling German-language manuscript travel diary from 1849, recording a wealthy family's journey through the Rhineland, southern Germany, and Austria immediately following the 1848-49 revolutions. Written by an observant, frequently humorous unnamed young woman, the journal provides exceptional primary source material for researchers in political culture, medicine, art, women's history, and nineteenth-century tourism. The Paulskirche & Political Culture A major historical highlight is a July visit to Frankfurt's Paulskirche, mere weeks after the National Assembly ceased meeting on May 30, 1849. The author describes the surviving decorations: "Die Kirche … war noch überall mit dreifarbigen Fahnen und Tüchern geschmückt. Es war überhaupt noch Alles so, wie es in der Nationalversammlung gewesen war." The visitors are shown the seats of Lichnowsky, Auerswald, and Blum—names already tied to revolutionary violence. Strikingly, the narrator sharply critiques the faces and figures drawn on deputies' desks, contrasting these diversions with the parliamentarians' heavy responsibilities for Germany's welfare, and concluding with a sarcastic remark about their supposedly dignified minds. Historic Medical Practices & Family Nursing Medical historians will find immense value in the father's frequent hospital inspections and the domestic nursing accounts. In Frankfurt, they inspect the Hospital of the Holy Ghost and the Israelite hospital, noting with surprise that the latter had eight patients and six doctors. Later, the author's mother is treated by the eminent Munich ophthalmologist Philipp Franz von Walther (1782-1849). The narrator details a memorable juxtaposition of professional and domestic care: "Es wurden also Blutigel geholt und während ich sie Mama hinter's Ohr setzte, gieng Papa aus, um das Krankenhaus zu sehen" (Leeches were fetched, and while I placed them behind Mama's ear, Papa went out to see the hospital). Other noted medical contacts include Dr. Cohen, Dr. Gerson of Hamburg, and Dr. Stemann of Heidelberg. Art, Galleries & Monumental Munich The family's artistic engagement is extensive. Highlights include a highly personal studio conversation with Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1804-1874) regarding his monumental Destruction of Jerusalem by Titus and its dramatic imagery. While she dismisses much of the Pinakothek, she admires Kaulbach enthusiastically. The family also inspects Ludwig von Schwanthaler's studio and the unfinished Ruhmeshalle prior to the Bavaria statue's 1850 unveiling. Visiting the statue's head, she logically doubts the claim that twenty-five people could fit inside, estimating room for only six. Tourism, Infrastructure & The Writer's Voice The sweeping itinerary spans Cologne, Bonn, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Munich, Berchtesgaden, Salzburg, Hallein, Leipzig, and Halle. The narrator documents shifting transport, including a post coach transfer near Reichenbach where they observe a vast railway bridge under construction (the Göltzschtalbrücke). The diary's appeal rests heavily in its vivid voice: she details the specialized smocks and straps issued for the Hallein salt mine tour, expresses relief when a pocketed journal escapes a border luggage search, and humorously notes that their hired donkeys in the Neckar valley show no appreciation for the beautiful landscape. Unresolved Authorship Clues The writer's identity remains a highly viable research project. Strong attribution clues include deep Hamburg connections (frequently comparing Munich's theatre to Hamburg's), the father's former residences in Halle, family letters from Aunt Therese and Grandmother, and detailed social visits in Leipzig with a "Professor Günther" and prominent chemist Otto Linné Erdmann (1804-1869).
