Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Good+. Oversized paperback, fully bilingual (French & English), 128 pages, b&w photos, NOT ex-library. Light wear, book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. -- A remarkable photographic journey through the history of Cannes during the interwar period, as captured by the renowned Traverso family. The Traverso archive, one of the most prestigious photographic collections in France, features candid and official images of the glamorous life of Cannes, showcasing the city's evolution as a global cultural and cinematic hub. The book documents Cannes' social life and its rise as a luxury destination in the early 20th century. Through black-and-white photography, the book reveals a bygone era filled with elegant parties, iconic personalities, and cinematic moments. It provides a rich visual account of the city's landscapes, events, and people, portraying the contrast between Cannes' understated sophistication and its emergence as a bustling, high-society hotspot. A must-have for lovers of photography, history, and cinema, this collection is an essential historical document that preserves the unique atmosphere of Cannes, from its beaches and grand hotels to the famous stars who visited the city. -- From the back cover: "Traverso: this name spans several generations of photographers. The Traverso family, coming from the Italian Piemont, settled in Cannes as early as in the mid 19th century. Soon after World War I, Auguste decided to work as a photographer; when he was a young man, he had become familiar with photography thanks to an enthusiast Dutch physician. The "Traverso shop" was founded in 1919; Auguste Traverso became a press photographer, he remained for long the single man who fixed the Cannes events on photographic plates: processions of floral floats, first sea bathers, erection of the first luxury hotels et casinos, visits of aristocrats from all over the world, scenes of daily Life in Cannes. The whole Traverso family was involved in the enterprise. Henri, the Auguste's grandson, who was born in 1930, perpetuated the passion and, with the advent of the film festival in 1946, he took many pictures using a Rolleiflex 6 x 6, which advantageously superseded the heavy and bulky 13 x 18 camera obscura. Henri Traverso worked for the Nice Matin newspaper, he took photographs of magnificent parties, princely wedding ceremonies and all the men and women in high places coming to La Croisette from all the countries. He immortalized the steps of the gradual metamorphosis of Cannes in the second half of the 20th century. Gilles Traverso, Henri's son, is continuing on his elders' way. Being the author of the "Collection Traverso" in the frame of photographic exhibitions, he delivers a pictorial treasure, an album of memories and visual anecdotes, relating the changes that occurred in Cannes in the 1920-1939 period, reawakened shots telling the metamorphosis of Cannes, a winter resort initially frequented by wealthy people and aristocrats, which opened up to the summer tourism and became the leading city along the French Riviera.".…
