Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the defects in England's criminal law, with a focus on reforms that could be implemented to create a more just and effective justice system. The author asserts that the law, as it currently stands, is riddled with overly precise and unnecessary technicalities, namely over-reliance on confession evidence and highly variable judicial discretion with punishments. These flaws can lead to innocent people being convicted and punished, while the guilty escape justice. The author's careful analysis and thoughtful suggestions make this an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the reform of the criminal justice system. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Armorial bookplate of John Rolle, Baron Rolle of Stevenstone (1750-1842).The bookplate is signed 'Huntly sc. 74 Bond Street'. This would be Elizabeth Huntley, who according to the Victoria and Albert Collection worked as an engraver at the above address in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. 2 parts in one volume, engraved additional title, 111 engraved plates after drawings by the author, Paul Hermann (30 June 1646, Halle - 29 January 1695, Leiden) was a German-born physician and botanist who for 15 years was director of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden. Born in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, Paul Hermann was the son of Johann Hermann, a well-known organist, and Maria Magdalena Röber, a clergyman's daughter. Hermann studied theology and medicine in Wittenberg and botany in Leipzig. After graduating from Europe's finest medical school, Padua in 1670, he was then engaged by the Dutch East India Company and went to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as a Ship's Medical Officer. He was in their employ from 1672 to 1677. During his stay there, he made a scientific collection of this island's plants and other organisms. He was then offered the job at Leiden and took up the Chair of Botany at the University of Leiden in 1679 and took up his residence in 1680 at Leiden where he spent the rest of his professional life. He immediately set to making it the finest botanical garden in Europe. Añadir al carritoAUGUST LOHR (1842-1919/20), Landscape scene in Mexico (Valley of Mexico / Popocatépetl), oil on canvas, 12 x 8 1/2 inches visible, 19 x 15 inches framed, signed and dated l.l. "August Löhr Mexico 1896." Provenance: Probably Sotheby's New York, label of the Doraduria Y Fabrica de Espejos Claudio Pellandini (framing shop, Mexico-City) attached. Born in Austria in 1842 August Löhr studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Karl Theodor von Piloty. The latter's style influenced the realist aesthetics of Löhr. He had emigrated to the Americas as early as 1885 but settled in Mexico only in 1890. There the focus of his oeuvre shifted towards the depiction of landscape scenes on a small to midsize scale. His renderings of the Mexican plains and valleys reveal his academic training as Löhr combines the serene atmosphere of his compositions with technical challenges such as the accurate rendering of night settings. In the Arader painting, a group of staffage figures, possibly vaqueros, is gathering around a campfire while the moon reflects on the river and mountain tops. Comparison with similar paintings sold at Christie's and Bonhams in 2005 and 2014 respectively suggests that the scene takes place in the Valley of Mexico or close to the volcano Popocatépetl. #10165F.

Añadir al carritoLoose as Issued. Condición: Good. Unique. Known as Sir Hussey Vivian from 1815 to 1828 and Sir Hussey Vivian, Bt, from 1828 to 1841. He was a British cavalry leader from the Vivian family. Corunna: During the retreat of Lieut-General Sir John Moore's army the 7th were constantly employed with the rearguard. It was not until September 1813 that the 7th returned to the Peninsula. On 24 November, Vivian (now colonel and aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent) was appointed to command a light cavalry brigade (13th and 14th Light Dragoons) under Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill in Wellington's army. With this corps he served at the Battle of the Nive (9-13 December). In January 1814, Vivian transferred to lead a light cavalry brigade in William Carr Beresford's corps. The 1,000-strong unit included the 18th Hussars and the 1st King's German Legion Hussars. Vivian took a marked part in the action of Gave de Pau and the Battle of Orthez. On 8 April, Vivian fought a brilliant action at Croix d'Orade on the Ers River, where he was very severely wounded. In this clash, the 18th Hussars seized a key bridge intact, helping Wellington to isolate the French defenders of Toulouse. At the beginning of 1815 he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB); he had been a major general for several months. Waterloo. Vivian's hussars made the final charge of the day between Hougoumont and La Haye Sainte, sweeping the Middle Guard and Line units before them before breaking upon the squares of the Old Guard, which they soon learned to avoid. This service was rewarded by the thanks of both houses of Parliament, an award of the KCH, and the Orders of Maria Theresa and St. Vladimir from the emperors of Austria and Russia.
