Spine dulled, and wear at cover edges. The Clodpole plate (from opposite page 66) appears as a frontispiece opposite the illustrated title-page. The artist, Alfred Ashley, had published THE ART OF ETCHING ON COPPER in 1849 [Sadleir 1223].

Basis for one of the most elusive of all "lost films," Ernest Lubitsch's 1928 production with Emil Jannings, Florence Vidor, and Lewis Stone. It was a 1930 nominee for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Stone, and two other Oscars. It won only for screenplay a silent film in the first year of the talkies. Some fragments of the film exist but the complete version has been lost.
