He was most known as the pioneer of radical-liberal history writing in Denmark. Biography: Arup was born at Slangerup in Frederikssund Municipality, Denmark. He was the son of the physician Peter Michael Christian Arup (18451915) and Malvina Cathrine Ipsen (18521934). He was raised in a cultured home and was the cousin of Danish-English structural engineer Ove Arup (18951988). He was educated as both a theologian and a historian. Arup attended the University of Copenhagen and was awarded his dr.phil. in 1907. As a young man he was deeply impressed by Viggo Hørup and his political anti-militarist line. During World War I, Arup was connected to the cabinet of social-liberal Carl Theodor Zahle as a permanent under-secretary. From 1908 to 1914 he was archivist in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1914 to 1916, he was the first Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office. In 1916, Arup replaced Kristian Erslev as professor of history at the University of Copenhagen, a position he held until 31 January 1947. Arup was also the editor of Historisk Tidsskrift from 1917 to 1924, involved in editing Danish medieval sources from 1931 to 1937, and for some years collaborator to the pioneering Danish-Swedish periodical Scandia. He took a particular interest in Iceland and, as member of several organisations dealing with Danish-Icelandic relations, he generally showed himself compliant with Icelandic views. no Gewicht in Gramm: 1046 4° (26x17,5cm), Softcover/Paperback.
