"With all the original illustrations by Sidney Paget plus additional illustrations by George Hutchinson and Frank H. Townsend. "A scientific detective, to whom Edgar Allan Poe's Dupin was a trifler and Gaboriau's Lecoq a child. He is a wonderful man, is Mr. Sherlock Holmes, and one gets so interested in his cleverness, and in the mysteries he unravels, that one cannot lay down the narrative until the end is reached." So wrote the reviewer for the Glasgow Herald when A Study in Scarlet first introduced Sherlock Holmes to the world in 1888. But this early brilliant novel and its sequel, The Sign of the Four, are rarely reprinted today, despite their appeal and the fact that they contain engaging descriptions of the Great Detective and his dedicated disciple, Dr. John H. Watson, fleshing out their characters, backgrounds, hobbies, and habits, as well as chronicling their earliest meetings. This newly revised edition of The Illustrated Sherlock Holmes Treasury has remedied that neglect, incorporating these two works together with marvelous illustrations which are virtually unknown today: those by George Hutchinson for A Study in Scarlet and those by Frank H. Townsend for The Sign of the Four. Other additions to this collection are two late stories, "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" and "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans," as well as an intriguing article from the 1890s Bookman, describing how Conan Doyle, during medical school, acquired the background for his famous detective's keen powers of observations and deduction. The core of this anthology remains the ever-fascinating stories in the complete Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, and the full-length novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles. They are presented here in their original classic setting - the pages of The Strand Magazine, featuring the incomparable illustrations of Sidney Paget. Immersing yourself in this treasury, you reaalize again why Sherlock Holmes is the most famous detective in English literature. Asked to choose three favorite heroes of the printed word, it is the rare reader who would not place Sherlock Holmes among them." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Paget, Sidne y (original illustrations); Hutchinson, George (additional illustrations); Townsend, Frank H. (additional illustrations); Jennis, Paul (jacket illustraton); Malloy, Brian (book design) (ilustrador). …

Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st ed., February 1908. Red decorative boards are still bright although with some soiling. Spine has a large stain discoloring the red bords. Previous owners name stamped at front endpaper. Illustrated with eight illustrations by F. H. Townsend."The face was the very counterpart of my own. It was as though I were gazing on myself, dead." This sentence indicates the theme in which Mr. Marchmont's new story runs. The scene of it is laid in Servia, among those who plot and counter-plot around the throne. Guy Pershore finds his wastrel cousin assassinated in his own chambers, and is compelled by circumstances to take the blame of the murder on himself, and even to impersonate the dead man in the ranks of the conspirators. The danger of that course is evident, and not a few adventures fall in his way. Associated with the incidents is the mysterious Normia, whose abduction forms one of the telling incidents of the story." --publisher's description. 344 pages. Townsend, F.H. (ilustrador). Book.…
