Werbelowsky and his son David Werbelowsky, and became part of the bedrock of early twentieth-century Jewish life and culture, publishing prayer books and religious texts as well as Yiddish novels, translations, and sheet music for the waves of Jewish immigrants to New York in the mid-late nineteenth century. The Lower East Side became a vibrant hub of Yiddish-speaking culture, with thirteen theaters (many of them vaudeville houses) producing significant-or sometimes simply prolific-Yiddish authors and composers, including Joseph Rumshinksy, the "Father of Yiddish Operetta," playwright and composer Anshel Schorr, singer and songwriter David Meyerowitz, and longtime collaborators in Yiddish theater Arnold Perlmutter and Herman Wohl, playwright, director, and actor Abraham (Avram) Goldfaden, and others.
