Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Extensively illustrated coffee-table-like book on the stage and set designs of Boris Aronson for the Yiddish theatre and Broadway. The book has sound hinges and does not lean. The previous owner's embossed symbol is located on the book's first p…age. Pages are clean and bright without toning, marks, creases, stains or wrinkles. Gold lettering and design on the front cover and spine is not rubbed and is bright. There is a tiny spot of discoloration from light exposure where the lower left corner of the front cover and the lower right corner of the spine meet. No bumped corners or rubbing to extremities. The book's dust jacket is not price-clipped and is clean. There is a little crimping at the top and bottom edges of the spine and slight wear to top and bottom edges but no holes, chips or tears. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. First. A small bookonly 24 unpaginated pagesserving as the catalog for a small yet important exhibition. Boris Aronson started designing theater sets revolutionary Russia and then Germany, working in the new Constructivist style, before moving to New York in 1923. He started out in the more adven…turous Jewish theaters of the city's Lower East Side but by 1932 he was working on Broadway. By the end of his life, in 1980, he had won six Tony Awards for scenic design, had designed sets for not only major theater productions of such plays as "The Crucible," "The Diary of Anne Frank," "Cabaret," and "Fiddler on the Roof," but he had become great friends with the painter Marc Chagall (whose work inspired some of his designs) and worked closely with composer Kurt Weill, director Harold Prince, and dancer/choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov. New York Times theater critic Frank Rich not only served as curator for this exhibition, he also thought Aronson so important that he co-wrote a biography of him two years before this exhibition of his drawings, paintings, photographs, and models with Aronson's widow, Lisa Jalowetz Aronson. An extended piece by Rich about Aronson also starts off this catalog. Fourteen images of designs appear in this catalog in addition to the design on the cover; eleven of them are in full color and twelve of them are full page. Although this book is new, it does show signs of shelf wear on the front cover, particularly at the spine. There some cosmetic damage to the upper right corner of the cover and faint smudging upper corners of several other pages. However, there is no damage to the images themselvesthey are prinstine. The pages are clean, bright, and besides the staining the the corners, unmarked. No pages are loose or missing. See our photos for details. Aronson, Boris (ilustrador).

Hard. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st. First edition. Hard cover in dust jacket. Published NY: Knopf, 1987, first printing. 4to., 12" x 10 3/4", xi+323pp., illustrated with nearly 600 color and b/w photographs. Black cloth with gilt titles. Most theatergoers don't know that the scenic designer fo…r the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof got his start in revolutionary Russia's avant-garde. Son of the Grand Rabbi of Kiev, Aronson rejected Russian director Vsevolod Meyerhold's communal theater when he fell under the spell of constructivist set designer Alexandra Exter. Arriving in New York in 1923, Aronson faced the predicament of a cosmopolitan artist confronted with a commercial theater that was in many ways backward. Undaunted, he designed sets for Yiddish theater, then worked for Harold Clurman's Group Theatre on Odets's Awake and Sing. His association with Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince at last gave him a chance to apply Exter's ideas of remaking reality in personal terms by making the set a total environment for the show. Near fine in very good dust jacket. Boris Aronson (ilustrador).

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Out of print and uncommon book on the work of Boris Aronson, 160 pgs with really lovely high quality color reproductions and text in French. Comes with a beautifully illustrated invitation postcard to events around the publication in NYC. Overall a very nice copy. Binding sturdy, sol…id, sound. Interior is bright and clean and free of marks. Issued without DJ, the printed boards have a few visible scuffs and scratches, particularly to the rear board, which has one far more pronounced but very thin scratch. Otherwise generally a very attractive copy.
