M. Dent & Sons Ltd. as No. 942 in the celebrated Everyman's Library series. This interesting anthology brings together five important works of early twentieth-century British theatre by some of the period's most distinguished playwrights: Milestones - Arnold Bennett and Edward Knoblock The Dover Road - A. A. Milne Hay Fever - Noel Coward Journey's End - R. C. Sherriff For Services Rendered - W. Somerset Maugham The collection provides a fascinating overview of British drama between the Edwardian period and the interwar years, ranging from social comedy and drawing-room wit to the psychological and emotional consequences of the First World War. Particularly noteworthy are Noel Coward's Hay Fever, a celebrated comedy of manners, and R. C. Sherriff's Journey's End, one of the most powerful dramatic portrayals of the experiences of British soldiers in the trenches. W. Somerset Maugham's For Services Rendered explores the social and personal consequences of the First World War, while Bennett and Knoblock's Milestones and Milne's The Dover Road provide contrasting perspectives on British society and changing social attitudes. Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Title: History of Charles XII Author: Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) Translator: Winifred Todhunter Prefatory Note: The Rt. Hon. John Burns Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., London; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York Publication Date: 1936 (reprint) Series: Everyman's Library, No. 270 - Biography Binding: Hardcover with original yellow illustrated dust jacket Condition: Very Good book in Good dust jacket Description An attractive 1936 reprint of Voltaire's celebrated History of Charles XII, translated by Winifred Todhunter, with a prefatory note by the Rt. Hon. John Burns. Published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. as No. 270 in the distinguished Everyman's Library series. Originally published in French in 1731, Voltaire's History of Charles XII is a classic work of eighteenth-century historical writing, recounting the extraordinary life and military campaigns of Charles XII of Sweden (1682-1718), one of Europe's most remarkable warrior kings. The narrative follows Charles's rise to power, his campaigns during the Great Northern War, his celebrated victories against numerically superior forces, his disastrous invasion of Russia and his eventual exile and return to Sweden. Voltaire combines historical observation, vivid narrative and philosophical reflection in a compelling examination of ambition, military genius, political power and the consequences of war. This edition includes the English translation by Winifred Todhunter and a prefatory note by John Burns, adding further historical and literary interest. The volume retains its distinctive original yellow Everyman's Library dust jacket, featuring the characteristic black decorative device, cream title panels and clearly printed series number. An appealing vintage edition of this important European historical work, particularly attractive for collectors of Voltaire, Swedish history, eighteenth-century literature and the Everyman's Library series. Condition Very Good hardcover in Good original dust jacket. The internal pages shown in the photographs are notably clean, bright and clearly printed, with only light natural age-related toning and occasional minor marks. The original yellow dust jacket retains its attractive bright colour, distinctive decorative design and clearly legible lettering. There is some rubbing, surface marking and edge wear, with small chips and minor paper losses, particularly at the spine extremities and upper corners. A small area of loss is visible at the upper corner of the front panel, exposing the underlying red cloth. Despite these age-related imperfections, the jacket remains attractive and substantially intact. The photographs do not conclusively establish the firmness of the binding or the completeness of the text. Please examine the accompanying photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description. Bibliographical Details First published in this Everyman's Library edition in 1908. The publication history lists subsequent reprints in 1912, 1915, 1925 and 1936, identifying this copy as the 1936 reprint.…
