Hardback: 8¾" x 5¾". Condición: Fine: Very small signs of wear. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. © 1990: A stand-alone novel by Kim Stanley Robinson. 1st edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: With 'A Short, Sharp Shock, Kim Stanley Robinson has turned his hand to the surreal. With the conviction of a persistent, recurring, unwelcome dream, the story is propelled from surprise to surmise to disillusionment to satisfaction to utter mystification. Incorporating erotic symbolism fraught with quasi-Freudian overtones and social contrivances invested with Jungian implications, Robinson has created a modern mythological playground for the twentieth century imagination. This hypnotic novel is more than just another spiritual quest for identity. With an urgency reminiscent of Philip K Dick, the ambiguous nature of reality itself is both central and inseparable from the protagonist's own personal search for meaning and understanding. Along the way, bizarre and colorful imagery and iconography are the order of the day, and moments of stability are unsustainable in the face of treachery and collusion among the elements of the physical environment as well as characters with secret agendas and unknown motivation:- (original cost £18.00). Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. 245, [5] pages. Illustrated dust jacket. Illustrated endpapers. Signed by the author on the title page. In a gothic netherworld of underground canals, arched chambers, and crumbling statuary, the members of the Family, a race of vampires, gather to discuss their future. Lucius Shepard (August 21, 1943 - March 18, 2014) was an American writer. Classified as a science fiction and fantasy writer, he often leaned into other genres, such as magical realism. Shepard was a native of Lynchburg, Virginia where he was born in 1943. His first short stories appeared in 1983, and his first novel, Green Eyes, appeared in 1984. At the time, he was considered part of the cyberpunk movement. Shepard came to writing late, having first enjoyed a varied career, including a stint playing rock and roll in the Midwest and extensive travel throughout Europe and Asia. Lucius Shepard won several awards for his science fiction: in 1985 he won John W. Campbell Award for best new writer, followed in 1986 with a best novella Nebula Award for his story "R&R", which later became part of his 1987 novel Life During Wartime. This novel won the Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis in 1990. His novella "Barnacle Bill the Spacer" won a Hugo in 1993. His poem "White Trains" won the Rhysling Award in 1988. Two early collections of short stories won the World Fantasy Award for best collection: The Jaguar Hunter in 1988 and The Ends of the Earth Collection in 1992. His novella "Vacancy" won a Shirley Jackson Award in 2008. Deviating from traditional tales that feature lonely vampires who prowl through human society in search of victims or solace, this account of vampires flourishing in their own "inhuman society" takes place in the year 1860, when their centuries-long breeding experiments have finally produced "The Golden," a mortal whose blood is perfect and powerful. Mobilized by the news of this discovery, aristocratic vampire clans arrive at the looming Castle Banat, where they plan to partake of the sublime blood. To their shock, the guests find that The Golden, a young girl, has been brutally murdered and her blood already drained. The story also follows the Inspector Michael Beheimâ"a recent vampireâ"assigned to track down the killer. Recounted in full 19th-century literary style with gothic elements and foreshadowing, the inspector navigates his way through the vampire world and the crime therein. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Arnie Fenner (Jacket Art and Calligraphy) (ilustrador).…
