On one side of 19 x 9 cm slip of paper with Osterley Park letterhead with her crested monogram in gold and black. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. Somewhat shaky and curiously-antiquated signature. Typed note in capitals. One word and a few minor corrections to text in autograph. Reads: 'May 24 Wednesday / My dear Jim / I am here at the receipt of custom - will you come & when? Come to dine & sleep - or stay. Only I have nothing to amuse you - can you come on the Saturday, or Sunday, moreover would you come here for or during Ascot Races your aff.te / C Clevd.' See image.

6.5 x 10 cm piece cut from envelope, with the seal (roughly 1 x 1.5 cm) in black wax (2.5 cm in diameter) attached on a strip of paper. The seal a firm impression in good condition and the envelope fragment in fair condition, on aged paper, strip carrying typewriten caption laid down at foot. The Princess's autograph is unsigned, and simply reads: 'À mon cher petit Léopold.'.

Violet Mary Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound (1889-1965), daughter of the Earl of Minto and wife of newspaper proprietor John Jacob Astor, 1st Baron Astor of Hever. 1 page, 8vo. Large coffee stain to one corner not affecting signature. She thanks her correspondent for a 'nice letter with regard to my year of office as President of the Women's Journalist Association', regretting that she was, 'in reality, so inactive a President. [.] I did so very much enjoy my first introduction to the Society and looked forward to meeting the Members again, but I lead a very busy life, and unluckily something always interfered and prevented my attending the luncheons. | However I have carried away a very happy recollection of your most interesting Society and its Members.'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Outer sides somewhat grubby, otherwise in good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Addressed 'Dear Sir' and signed 'Devonshire'. In reply to the unnamed recipient's letter he explains that he would 'find it very difficult to come to Derby for the distribution of the Prizes at the Grammar School in the month of July', as all his 'free days in that month are already disposed of and parliamentary and official exigencies might interfere with any engagements I might make for the remainder.' If however he can let him know 'what amount of time, & at what period of the day, would be required', he will see whether he can make a 'provisional engagement'. He recently wrote to the Bishop of Derby regarding the school, 'and found that the [?] take too desponding a view of its prospects'.

On piece of paper roughly 2 x 3.5 cm. Discoloured, and with traces of glue from previous mounting on reverse. Slight loss to one corner and tiny closed tear at head. Attractive calligraphic signature, with tall, closely-spaced, vertically elongated letters. Top loops of initial 'J' trimmed. See Image.

In fair condition, on lightly aged paper. Folded once. Signed 'G Card d'Hohenhohe', and with his embossed monogram. He is enclosing 'il libro per la Signora Costanza', together with the three letters of recommendation, which she may read before sealing. He ends with good wishes for the voyage. See image.

Extremely long map, folded into original black stiff printed wrappers, of the entire West Coast of the United States. Shows from Tijuana to Vancouver. Verso is filled with uncolored ads and promotions, mostly photographic, for towns and cities along the route. Most of the ads are for hotels. Very good condition with some splits starting along folds. The recto is brightly colored. The geography is somewhat fanciful in places, with towns and features (such as the cities of the Central Valley of California) being shown closer to the Pacific Ocean than they actually are. Map illustrations include stylized state houses, smoking volcanoes, relief map details for mountains, miniature architectural drawings of Missions, National Park Lodges, oil derricks in the oil fields of Southern California, and much more. Letter One (30 Nov. 1887): "On carefully re-considering the article you were so good as to send me, I thought it would be better to write a new one, which I now send you. [.] I think it gives a fair idea on the whole, to an outsider, of what the Breviary [which he had translated] is in practise - and I should prefer to leave to you the task of abridging it. Only I would ask you to let me know how you purpose to do so. I have myself marked in pencil some passages which seem to me the less important, but without meaning to control your judgment. I also take the linberty of sending you herewith a little book, which contains nearly everything (except, of course, the changeable prayers & lessons) that is in ordinary use from day to day. If you have time to look over it, and especially to read the Preface & final notes, you will gain a very accurate impression of what the daily office means. | I presume you did not want any analysis of the Kalendar or specimen of the directions in the Ordo Recitandi [phrase underlined][Postscript follows} It occurs to me as possible that by inserting what I have written, you may obviate the necessity of a separate article upon the Canonical Hours [phrase underlined], or, at any rate, be able to reduce it to very small proportions." Letter Two (12 Aug. 1892): "I am much obliged by your letter, and should be very glad to write the article in question. I sometime ago studied the subject so much, and made so many notes upon it, that I hope I might be able to do so satisfactorily to you. | My notes however are all at Mount Stuart, and so are all the books of reference to which they refer. I should be obliged therefore, if you would let me know the very latest date at which you must have the M.S. | I have at this moment on hand, besides some other work, the compilation of a speech upon the history of Wales, which I am to deliver at Rhyl before the National Eisteddford on Sept.7". He then details all the obligations of the next few weeks (speech at the "triennial music festivals" in Cardiff, "lecture upon the materials for the history of Llewellyn ap Gryffuyd which I purpose to deliver as my inaugural address as President of the Cymmrodorion Society in London", sit for his portrait as Mayor for Cardiff Town (Herkomer), work for the Universities Commission, as well as multiple tasks when he can eventually go to Mount Stuart.
