Soft cover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 120 pages. Published in 2001. Collection of color portrait-photographs. The very first title in the iconic series of "Portraits Photographiques et Uniformes". Limited Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition, which was issued simultaneously with it. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Charles Freger: Regular-sized volume format. Pristine-white softcovers with black titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Charles Freger. Text by Philippe Arbaizar in the French original and felicitous English translation. Pristine-white cardboard slipcase with Limitation Statement on one side. 7.5 X 6 inch Fuji Crystal Archive Paper original color print encased in its own protective plastic sleeve and laid into the book. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Paris, France to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with large French flaps, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Charles Freger's "Portraits Photographiques et Uniformes". A representative selection from his legendary Series: Sports teams, uniformed schoolchildren, members of the military in full regalia, young people as themselves while being self-identified members of a group ("tribe"). "Since 1999, Charles Freger has been photographing his contemporaries in the midst of their adoptive tribes. Placed before a neutral background, facing the lens, the model, wearing his or her uniform, poses within their own environment, but remains separate from the surroundings and its activities" (Raphaelle Stopin). The work of a brilliant portrait-photographer whose only possible equal is Rineke Dijkstra, the Freger Style is documentary PLUS portrait. His antecedent is August Sander, with an opposite twist: His portraits present not a national community (as Sander does) but the individuals who give a specific community its face and form. As such, his work is neither purely documentary or sociological. His emphasis on individual particularity repudiates nationalism as well as "globalization" and "the human family", the most cherished ideas of humanist-photojournalists (and corporations), as nothing more and nothing less than a myth. Instead, he suggests, human beings choose, almost innately, to identify with a much smaller community than the nation or the UN. With every seemingly exotic portrait, Freger poses the same provocative and compelling questions: Why do I choose to belong to a tribe? Why do I adhere to its rules? Why do I believe in the necessity of social cohesion? Why do I express myself through others? Freger reminds us that so-called personal identity is inconceivable without the notion of belonging to a community; ethnic and sexual minorities understand this instinctively better than anyone else. An absolute "must-have" title for Charles Freger collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the slipcase itself. It comes with a 7.5 X 6 inch Fuji Crystal Archive Paper original color print that is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on verso by Charles Freger. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Freger signed the print, NOT the book. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHARLES FREGER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 2914573006. Signed by Author.
