No Binding. Condición: New. Signed "Thomas Stafford, Aleksey Leonov, Donald Slayton, Vance Brand, Valeriy Kubasov" in black ink. Color 8.0" X 10.0" NASA photograph in fine condition. After the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, the tense relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union was begining to improve. America's moon landing program was over, and the Apollo spacecraft was due to be retired to make way for the space shuttle program. A joint U.S./Soviet space mission, first proposed in the 1960s, was now diplomatically possible. The final Apollo spacecraft to fly was commanded by Tom Stafford, a space veteran who flew the lunar module on Apollo 10 as a rehearsal for the landing. Deke Slayton, an astronaut who had been grounded in 1962 for an abnormal heart rhythm, had served as chief astronaut on the Apollo program. At 51, he was the oldest person to fly in space up to that time. Rookie astronaut Vance Brand would go on to command three space shuttle flights. Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was world famous as humanity's first spacewalker. His co-pilot, Valeri Kubasov, had flown before, on Soyuz 6. After a successful Soyuz 19 launch, a Saturn 1B rocket lifts Apollo into orbit. After a series of maneuvers, the Apollo and Soyuz dock and the two crews celebrate their historic meeting. Soyuz 19 landed on July 21; Apollo remained in orbit until July 24. Signed by Author(s).

framed. Condición: very good. Exceptional signed uncirculated "short snorter", 1969 series C, One Dollar Bill, in ball point pen, by the Russian and American crews of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, includes: Thomas P. Stafford, Vance D. Brand, Donald "Deke" Slayton, Alexei Leonov, and Valeri Kubasov. In a simple gold frame with green matte. This item should not be confused with similar items signed in black felt-tip that were accomplished later-in-life to meet demands of the collectors' market. Our example comes directly from the collections of Dr. Forostenko and was signed a the time of the Mission. From the personal collection of Anatole Forostenko (1939- ), US Government translator and negotiator assigned to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Johnson Space Center for the Apollo-Soyuz test project. In this capacity, Forostenko was responsible for teaching Russian to the Apollo, as well as serving as a liaison officer in an attempt to bridge the gap caused by the cultural differences existing between the two crews. Needless to say, he spent hundreds of hours interacting with the Russian and American crews, developing camaraderie before, during, and after the mission, that would culminate in life-long friendships with all.
