Norah Lofts novel reimagining the Nativity with psychological depth, tracing the intersecting journeys of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and three Magi depicted in the novel as hailing from Korea, Mongolia, and Africa, converging on Bethlehem. BCE Doubleday mid-century edition with wrap-around jacket by British artist Antony Groves-Raines. Ships in box. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: Norah Lofts' celebrated biblical novel, How Far to Bethlehem?, reimagines the ancient narrative of the Nativity with psychological depth and vivid historical realism. Moving away from her familiar East Anglian settings, Lofts crafts an intricate, three-dimensional portrait of the individuals whose lives converged in a Judean stable. The story brings a raw human focus to the vulnerabilities and struggles of Mary and Joseph, the simple faith of local shepherds, and the diverse journeys of three legendary Eastern wise men traveling across deserts to follow a mysterious star. The narrative weaves together disparate voices, highlighting the physical hardships and emotional weight of the journey. Lofts' unique interpretation presents the three Magi as hailing from vast distances: an impoverished astronomer, a young nomad, and a learned scholar, each driven by distinct motives and transformed by the journey. Their convergence creates a compelling tapestry of hope, destiny, and quiet faith in the ancient world. This mid-century Doubleday Book Club Edition is presented in orange textured boards with black spine titles, showcasing a striking wrap-around dust jacket designed by British painter and illustrator Antony Groves-Raines, with deckled fore-edge paper margins and a decorative green publisher's top-edge stain. Groves-Raines, Antony (ilustrador).…
