Este libro recoge las actas del XVIII Seminario anual del Master de Nobiliaria, Heráldica y Genealogía de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia que se celebró en Madrid los días 10, 11 y 12 de mayo de 2022, en esta ocasión dedicado al Escudo de España. Como el lector podrá comprobar, se explican con riguroso método histórico-crítico los orígenes, evolución y simbolismo de los diversos componentes tradicionales del Escudo de España a lo largo de casi nueve siglos, desmitificando teorías fabulosas y ahistóricas que en tiempos pasados han oscurecido el verdadero significado de tales emblemas heráldicos. En el mismo sentido se estudian la bandera nacional, otros escudos reales (reinas consortes, príncipe heredero, infantes de España) así como la vigente normativa en materia de uso y protección jurídica de los símbolos nacionales. Ciertamente, los símbolos políticos que representan la Nación y el Estado son objeto de tratamiento legal en la mayor parte de los países de nuestro entorno. En el caso del Reino de España, el actual Escudo fue regulado por la Ley 33/1981 de 5 de octubre (BOE de 19 de octubre). Por su parte, la Bandera de España, consignada en el artículo 4.1 de la Constitución Española de 1978, fue regulada en la Ley 39/1981, de 28 de octubre (BOE de 12 de noviembre); sería ocioso citar aquí toda la notable normativa posterior que ha completado tales símbolos del Estado y de la Nación española. Importa destacar que todo ello no ha sido fruto de la improvisación del legislador sino una tradición secular que, como tal, debe ser estudiada y preservada. Este es, precisamente, el objetivo de la presente obra; conocer y transmitir.
