A rarely found BRIGHT COMPLETE COPY. Bookplate of the 20th-c. Catalan book collector Ramon Trias i Fargas (1922-1989) glued to the upper pastedown. The account describes the geography, natural history, discovery and conquest, and missionary activities of Spaniards in Venezuela. The manuscript was written in 1759 and later updated by the author to cover events up to the date of publication. The three wonderful plates show shocking scenes of martyrdom: 1) the martyrdom of two Franciscans, one of them Father Ruiz Blanco (Libro III, Cap. XV: 272-273); 2) martyrdom of Bishop D. Nicolás Gervasio Labrid (Libro III, Cap. XXVI: 330-331); 3) martyrdom of the Franciscan Friar Andrés López at the hands of the Carib Indians (Libro III, Cap. XXVI: 336-337). The horrific scene shows the naked dead body of the friar hanging from the branch of a tree; a native is feeding a fire beneath the corpse, while other natives seem to approach the body with knives in order to dismember it, perhaps, with a cannibalistic aim. The engraved t-p represents an allegory of America, a woman with her head adorned with feathers surrounded by a series of American animals such as a manatee, a sloth, a mapurite, among others. This work includes the extraordinary 1778 Spanish map of Northern Brazil, eastern Venezuela, and Guyanas, prepared by Luis de Surville y Villerey. When issued, this was the most comprehensive study of the overlapping and complex Orinoco-Amazon-Rio Negro system. "The map is a very fine one, on a large scale, and was executed by Louis Surville under the order of Don Joseph Galvez, a noted name in Spanish American history Caulin spent many years as a missionary in the Northern regions of South America, among the Indians, and his descriptions are the most truthful which are extant. He gives long descriptions about the customs, habits, natural products and precious stones which are to be found in many parts of America. The author also gives many details on the famous missionaries among the American Indians." (note from a 1926's Maggs catalogue).
