Contemp. three-quarter vellum with floral patterned boards. Uncut. (4), 170, (10); (22), 158, (16), (2, blank); (14), 152, (28), 64 pp. Two engraved titles, first printed title in red and black + 17 folding engraved plates (2 misbound). Ownership signature of Dr. J. van de Hoeven (1802-68, Dutch zoologist) on first leaf of each vol. and with the van der Hoeven bookplate. Old labels removed from upper spines; a fine set. "Anton Nuck practiced first at The Hague and then became professor of anatomy and surgery at Leyden in 1687. He was well known as an oculist, aurist and dentist. His studies of glands and lymph glands were noteworthy. His best known works were 'Sialographia et ductum aquosorum anatome nova', Leyden, 1695, and 'Adenographia', Leyden, 1692. .His anatomical description of the various glands were (sic) highly praised by Soemmering a century later. In anatomy, his name is perpetuated by the canal of Nuck." (R. H. Major, 'Hist. medicine', 1954). This set, the first collected edition, was made up from the sheets of the final editions of Nuck's works. See: G-M 1101 & 1213 for the original editions; Becker Ophthal. Coll. Cat., nos. 276 & 277. His name remains in anatomy in connection with the canal, or diverticulum of Nuck. This volume contains some of his best work.

Antonius Nuck van Leiden (Harderwijk, 1650 Leida, 5 agosto 1692) è stato uno dei medici e anatomisti più celebri del suo tempo. Dopo aver studiato a Leida, dove ricevette il dottorato nel febbraio del 1677, con una tesi sul diabete praticò l'arte medica a Delft. Nel 1683 si spostò a L'Aia per insegnare anatomia al Collegium anatomicum chirurgicum. Tornò poi a Leida dove ottenne una cattedra di medicina e anatomia. Famoso anche come oculista, otorino, dentista viene ricordato principalmente per i suoi studi sui vasi linfatici e le ghiandole salivari, di cui è considerato uno dei pioniere: inventò infatti la prima scialografia, sia introducendo un mezzo di "contrasto" nei dotti salivari, sia nei vasi sanguigni, come aveva già tentato Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731). Anton Nuck (1650?1692), professor of anatomy at Leiden, was d…istinguished for his investigations of the glands and lymphatics. In this book he first described the lymphatic network of the ovary. On pages 130 et seq. he describes the inguinal canal, called after him the ?canal of Nuck? The volume also contains (pp. 68?69) Nuck?s experiment by which he recognised the homology of the mammalian ovary with that of oviparous animals. Professor Needham calls this ?very important, as one of the earliest instances of experimental procedure. He ligatured the uterine horns after copulation in a dog, and observed pregnancy afterwards, implantation having taken place above the ligature. Antonj Nuck (1650-1692), was also often called Antonius Nuck van Leiden, after his native city. He commenced his medical studies in Harderwyjk, but changed to Leiden where he r…eceived his doctorate in 1677 with the dissertation diabetes. He then settled as a practitioner in Delft. In 1683 he was called to Den Haag as a lecturer of anatomy at the Collegium anatomicum chirurgicum, working there as a teacher of anatomy before eventually returning to Leiden, where he was appointed to the chair of medicine and anatomy. His excellent theoretical lecturing, but even more his practical-anatomical teaching soon earned him a reputation that attracted students even from far away to Leiden.
