References to fermentation, effervescence, circulation, and digestive transformation reveal the transitional state of medicine during the Scientific Revolution, where Galenic medicine, chemistry, and emerging mechanistic physiology collided in often gloriously argumentative fashion. Seventeenth-century physicians truly treated academic disagreement as a blood sport with footnotes. The text is particularly notable for its engagement with the chemical and physiological theories surrounding digestion and internal bodily processes shortly after the circulation of blood had become widely debated across Europe following Harvey's discoveries.
