Corners and spine ends bumped & rubbed. spine loss and split across and partially split along front edge. Rear cover loose. Internal annotation in a neat hand.Bookplate of Bishop Thomas Welland Diocese of Down Connor and Dromore on front pastedown and signed by him on f.f.e.p. in pencil. Internal annotation also appears to be by him. It was his own copy of this book which is in Greek and Latin. This particualr issue of the book is quite scarce and the interesting association with bookplate, signature and annotation adds to its desirability. Thomas James Welland March 1830 - 29 July 1907 was an Irish Anglican bishop. He was born in county Dublin (his father Joseph being an architect) and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin (BA mathematics 1854, MA 1857, BD & DD 1890) and ordained in 1854. He began his ordained ministry as a curate at Carlow, after which he was vicar of Painstown and then assistant chaplain of the Mariners? Church in Kingstown. He was the clerical secretary of the Jews? Society, Ireland from 1862 to 1866 and then assistant chaplain at Christ Church, Dublin until 1870. He then became the incumbent at St Thomas?s Belfast from 1870 until his ordination to the episcopate as the Bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore in 1892. He died in post on 29 July 1907. 'Despite its perennial popularity and the admiration of no less an authority than Goethe, Daphnis and Chloe was largely ignored by classical scholars, being considered trivial and/or pornographic, until the 1960s, when the ancient novel began to be viewed as a worthwhile object of study.' Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: VERY GOOD. Revised Edition. Extensively annotated copy with numerous inlaid pages transcribing personal letters to Field, reviews publications engaging with Field, and in-person remarks made by Field. From the personal library of one 'W. M. Butcher' whom we presume to be a student or colleague of Dr. Field, with all transcriptions written in his hand with fountain pen along with numerous marginal annotations in the same pen as well as pencil. Briefly put, this copy contains a wealth of responses and engagements from members of the Revision Committee to one a scholar who had an outsize impact on the work and reception of the Revised Version. Dr. Field was one of the most highly regarded scholars in the Church of England, making great contributions in the fields of philology, Biblical Studies, and Patristics. Known as 'Field's Hexapla', his 'Origenis Hexaplorum quae supersunt' -- a critical reconstruction of Origen's sixfold edition of the Old Testament with Commentary -- was one of the greatest works of Biblical scholarship of the 19th century. The ambitious project of revising the Authorised (King James) Version of the Bible was perhaps the greatest publishing and literary event of the 19th century, causing public uproar and scholarly excitation while leading to over 3 million new Bibles sold by Oxford and Cambridge in the first year of completion in 1885. The project was undertaken mainly to account for new manuscript discoveries and advances in textual and philological studies by scholars such as Field. Although his deafness prevented his participation in the official meetings in the Jerusalem Chamber, Field's opinions were highly regarded and coveted. Transcribed on the RPEP, Prof. S. R. Driver (of the Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon), writes to Rev. J. H. Burn: 'I never saw Dr. Field at the meetings of the Revision Company; + I believe that (Being very deaf) he never attended. But he always sent very carefully prepared suggestions for ammended renderings, which were read out by the Secretary, + usually formed the starting point of the discussion which followed. Dr. Field in spite of his absence from its meetings, was thus a most valuable member of the Revission Comp.; his renderings were scholarly + accurate; _ without some slight modification of form, were often those which were finally accepted by the Comp. Dr. Field's scholarhip, both in Hebrew and Syriac, was sound + exact; + his edition of the Hexapla, in particular, has the reputation of being a masterpiece of painstaking and successful work.' The basis of the present book was that very correspondence first sent to the revision committee. First published in 1881 upon the release of the Revised Version of the New Testament, Field's *Notes on the Translation of the New Testament* was neither a repudiation nor vindication, but a continuation of the project of composing a new translation not just for the scholarly titilation of academics, but one worthy to be 'appointed to be read in churches.' This second edition was made using a manuscript left nearly complete upon Field's death in 1885, using also the annotations made in his own copy of the first edition. W. M. Butcher records no less than 19 exerpts such as this from notable scholar-churchmen, mostly members of the Revision Committee, including such legendary names at Robert Scott (of Liddell & Scott's Greek Lexicon); Bishop J. J. S. Perowne, Bishop Charles Ellicott; S. A. Driver, Archbishop Richard Chenevix Trench, and William Robertson Smith, who calls Field, 'unquestionably the most learned man in the O.T. Company of Revisers' in a letter to the Bishop of Edinburgh. Butcher references a 'note added by Dr. Field in Dr. Greenhill's copy.' We presume this is William Alexander Greenhill, who composed Field's entry in The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Whether Butcher transcribed all of the manuscript material here from Greenhill's copy, or had access to Field's papers at Trinity College, Cambridge, we do not know. xvii, [1], 267pp.…

Añadir al carritoHalf Leather. Condición: Good. First Edition. First edition of what appears to have been Dionysius Lardner's first published book, and an unusually interesting contemporary student's working copy. Published in Dublin in 1824, Lardner's lectures arose after he discovered that an unauthorised abridgement of Locke was being sold to students under his name. Rather than encourage learning by rote, Lardner wanted students to examine Locke critically and "judge and reason" for themselves. This copy appears to have been specially bound for precisely that purpose, with substantial gatherings of writing paper inserted amongst and after the printed text. An anonymous early reader filled many of these leaves with extensive philosophical notes and abstracts, while also answering Lardner's printed questions. Particularly revealing are manuscript study schedules allocating hours to a Tutor, Locke, Bacon, Butler, Cicero, Logic and other subjects, strongly suggesting contemporary academic use, apparently in the Trinity College Dublin environment. A fascinating survival in which the physical copy records the use for which Lardner intended his book: not simply the reading of Locke, but active study, questioning and preparation for examination. With the Dublin bookseller's ticket of E. Madden, 7 Grafton Street. =================================================================== Binding : Contemporary or near-contemporary half calf over marbled boards, with calf corners; spine with raised bands, gilt rules and blind-stamped decoration, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece lettered in gilt "LARDNER'S LOCKE". Binding rubbed and worn at extremities, with some wear and loss at spine ends, but remaining sound and attractive. The construction of the volume, incorporating substantial gatherings of writing paper, appears deliberately designed to facilitate its use as a working study copy. Collation and condition : Title-page; Preface, pp. i-iii; preliminary Lecture List, beginning part-way through Lecture III and continuing to Lecture VII, pp. iii-viii, with manuscript annotations; main printed text pp. 1-164; concluding Lecture List, Lectures XX-XXVII, pp. xvii-xx. Printed pp. 81-82 are absent. Pages 83-86 are damaged at the inner margin and laid down onto old paper guards. Pages 127-128 are torn with loss at the upper outer corner. Specially bound with substantial gatherings of blank writing paper: following p.112 are 4 pages of manuscript notes and 8 blank pages; following p.128, 14 manuscript pages and 6 blanks; following the printed text, 16 manuscript pages, approximately 127 blank pages, and 3 manuscript pages containing the study timetable. Numerous further contemporary manuscript annotations and answers occur throughout the printed text. Despite the textual defects noted above, the copy's extensive contemporary manuscript material is an integral and particularly interesting feature of the volume. =================================================================== LARDNER, Rev. Dionysius. A Series of Lectures upon Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Dublin: Printed by R. Graisberry. Published by Hodges and McArthur, 21, College-Green, 1824. First edition. An important early work by the Irish scientist, writer and educationalist Dionysius Lardner (1793-1859), apparently his first published book. Lardner was then associated with Trinity College Dublin and was subsequently to become one of the nineteenth century's best-known popularisers of science and general knowledge, most notably as editor of the extensive Cabinet Cyclopaedia. Lardner's preface gives an unusually revealing account of the book's origins. He explains that Dublin publishers had repeatedly approached him to prepare a condensed version of John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, proposals which he had declined despite offers of payment. He was finally prompted to write after discovering that a spurious contraction of Locke in catechetical form was circulating under his name, being sold by booksellers and purchased by students as Lardner's own work. Finding himself, as he puts it, burdened with the errors of others, he undertook the present lectures partly "in self defence." Lardner nevertheless refused to produce the straightforward abridgement originally requested. His intention was to explain and illustrate Locke, compare his opinions on disputed questions with those of other modern philosophers, point out instances where he believed Locke contradicted himself, and incorporate those portions of the Essay necessary to understanding the argument. Of particular interest is Lardner's criticism of students who simply "get by heart" Locke's doctrines. He regarded philosophical investigation as an exercise of the understanding and deliberately attempted to present disputable questions from more than one side, enabling the reader to "judge and reason for himself." At his publishers' request he also supplied questions upon the lectures, graded according to importance and intended for students of differing levels of attainment. A contemporary working study copy : This particular copy is considerably more interesting than an ordinary example because it appears to have been specially bound as a working academic copy, with substantial gatherings of blank writing paper inserted at intervals through the printed work and a particularly large gathering at the end. These are not conventional alternating interleaves, but blocks of writing paper evidently provided for extensive notes. The anonymous contemporary or early nineteenth-century reader made considerable use of them. Numerous answers have been written alongside Lardner's printed student questions, while the additional leaves contain extended philosophical notes, definitions, arguments and abstracts relating to Locke. Among the manuscript material is an "Abstract of Book 4th [of the Essay Concerning] Human Understanding", together with discussions headed or concerned with such subjects as "Sensitive Knowledge," intuitive knowle.…

Contemporary quarter calf over paper-covered boards, raised bands, gilt fillets and lettering piece to spine. Moderate rubbing and scuffing to boards, heavier rubbing to extremities with wear to spine ends and corners, boards beginning to separate, but secure. Copperplate frontispiece with architectural border, woodcut image of author to verso. Moderate toning and light foxing to interior, faint dampstaining to foot of text block in a few places. Partially struck-through name ("Gavroux"?) to title page, check marks, underlining and annotations to several leaves, a few somewhat illegible, in somewhat later hand. $3,500. * Third and definitive edition, heavily revised and corrected by the author. A counselor to the Parlement of Paris from 1541, Andre Tiraqueau was a dominant figure in sixteenth-century French jurisprudence and a leading legal humanist. First published in 1543, De Utroque Retractu is his landmark comparative study examining the intersection of Roman civil law and the customary law (coutumes) of Poitou, specifically focusing on the legal rights of retraction (the right to reclaim familial or transacted property). Highly influential in reconciling regional customary traditions with classical Roman frameworks, the work was widely received and went through numerous editions well into the seventeenth century. Based on paleographic evidence and thematic content, this copy features extensive margins heavily annotated by a contemporary hand in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. The anonymous annotator exhibits a sophisticated command of local practice, offering a critical dialogue with Tiraqueau's text. The commentary focuses heavily on issues of inheritance and succession law, alongside notes on statutory penalties (f. 16/p. 86) and legal prohibitions against the alienation of third-party goods (f. 200).
