Sunned spine to D/J.price clipped prev owners name inside This remarkable book is based on the recently discovered letters that Lizzie wrote home to her family. They chronicle her extraordinary 4000-mile journey to Orton, a rubber settlement in the heart of the Bolivian jungle, and her experiences there as a manager's wife. These fascinating letters, which span the period from 1896 to Lizzie's death in 1899, survived intact and were preserved by Lizzie's sister, Nell. After Nell's death they passed on to Ann Brown who is Lizzie's great-niece. They are illustrated in this book with many early photographs in black and white, including some of Lizzie in South America, and also with an equal number in colour. Lizzie's letters have been authoritatively edited and linked by Tony Morrison who has provided background information on both the rubber industry and travel conditions in Amazonia at that time. This book not only traces the brutal history of the rubber boom, but also gives an insight into the character of a lively and courageous young woman. Illustrated. 160 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
