Añadir al carritoHardbound. Condición: Very Good. Reprint Edition. Description: Originally published in 1943, this reprint edition is part of the Time-Life World War II Classics series, In 1940, Etta Shiber, a shy 62-year old American widow living in Paris, and her friend Kitty Beaurepos helped smuggle more than 150 British servicemen out of occupied France. This is Shiber's account of their extraordinary accomplishments, and offers evidence that the most ordinary people can perform heroic deeds in their own quiet, everyday manner. The two women lived an uneventful life, attending concerts and the theater, and after the outbreak of the war, visiting hospitalized solders as volunteers for the French equivalent of the USO. But in June 1940, their lives, like those of all Parisians, were changed irrevocably. As the fall of Paris became inevitable, the two women attempted to flee the city, but were forced to turn back. Stopping at an inn for refreshments, the nervous innkeeper brought forth a downed British airman. Struck by the young man's resemblance to Shiber's dead brother, the two women determined to save him. That impulsive decision was their first step into the dangerous activities they were to pursue until their inevitable arrest. This copy includes the publisher's insert. BINDING/CONDITION: from a uniformly bound series: tan marbled boards with half black imitation leather (corners and spine), all edges gilt, ribbon place marker, Very Good condition. Printed endpapers. 8vo (8.5 inches tall). 392 pages.
