[From the foreword] "Rarely does a society invest textiles with intense religious significance and yet accord them primary importance as indicators of temporal wealth and status. Such, however, has been their role for centuries in Indonesia, where weaving, the work of women, was a counterpart to sculpture and jewelry, created by men. Like painting in other cultures, textiles assumed an esteemed place as the greatest of two-dimensional art forms in Indonesia, where painting was almost nonexistent. Far beyond their customary utilitarian roles—as clothing, for example, or furnishings—textiles have been employed by the peoples of Indonesia in potent emblematic and sacred contexts. These textiles from tribal Indonesia cast an immediate spell; the vibrancy and beauty of their color and the unfamiliarity of their imagery evoke a visceral response mixed with wonderment. Far from appealing simply as decoration, they project in some instances the same dynamism as modern abstract art, in others a subtly sophisticated classicism. The many-layered significance of their designs gradually reveals itself, both visually and in the complexity of their powerful symbolism. Ancient Indonesia was the hub of trading systems, and a pathway for religious and artistic influences, which conveyed exotic patterns and forms throughout Indonesia's thousands of island populations, supplementing and modifying patterns already millennia old. Images deeply embedded in the ancient neolithic traditions of Indonesian peoples combined with designs acquired from other Asian civilizations to create a rich iconographic tradition which celebrated a cosmology founded on a pantheon of gods, a population of revered ancestors, and a universe teeming with supernatural presences. Textiles were central to the tasks of mediating between mankind and this often dangerous or terrifying universe, and of maintaining a balance that kept them in their due positions. With the rapid erosion of Indonesia's traditional cultures, its fragile legacy of textiles is not being renewed. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to exhibit a selection of works from Sumba, Toraja, and Lampung from the collection of Anita E. Spertus and Robert J. Holmgren, which has a legendary reputation among students of the subject. …
