The first five lines are scored through, as is another passage on the first page. The deleted commencement reads: 'Madam. / I hasten to return Yr. R. H. my humble thanks… for the kind & gracious reply to my letter which [?] or receiving, in which Yr. R. H. confers upon Lady D. & myself in a manner so peculiarly [?] honour we have most anxiously desired.' The honour in question is 'consenting to be godmother to our little girl who shall be always brought up in every sentiment of respect & affection for her Royal Protector, whose name she will have the Honour of bearing.' His efforts on behalf of the recently-emancipated slaves (including the financing of two schools) caused him to become unpopular with the plantation owners, and he was effectively ousted in 1836. 2pp, 12mo. Twenty-one lines of text. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded… for postage. Small square of paper with engraving of the family crest laid down at the foot of the second page. Addressed to 'My Dear Sir' and signed 'Sligo'. The Marquis's handwriting is somewhat opaque. Begins: 'Mr [Bailey?] having taken on himself to say that you might give me the Sixty Guineas that I was offered for my box in the remainder of the Season from the 19th of June, or rather from after next Saturday [Evng?] I think that the best way to make matters all right will be to send you a check for Eighty Guineas'. He continues with reference to arrangements for the following year.

In fair condition, lightly aged and with slight creasing to one corner and at the head (not affecting text). To the right, in the section reserved for the address, she writes: 'Hardy / with all…very / best wishes & love / from / Iris !'. Beneath this is a pencil note identifying Amies as the recipient. At top left, in another hand (her husband John Bayley's?) is written 'Born before all time: / a dispute over Christ's origin / Karl Joseph Kuschel'. Kuschel's book was published in 1992. See IMage.
