Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. Second revised. Small quarto. [12], 407, [1, censura]pp. Woodcut title vignette, initials and tail piece. Contemporary vellum. Intermittent light toning to text. A very good copy with ample margins. Second, substantially expanded edition of the history of the University of Louvain, with copious information on the various colleges and faculty, including the professors' published works. The very scarce first edition was published by Olivier and Coenenstijn in 1635. As noted in an early annotation at the front pastedown, the work was eventually placed on the Roman Catholoc Index of prohibited books. A professor of Hebrew and of law at the Academy of Louvain, Valerius Andreas Desselius (1588-1655) served in his later years as the Academy's librarian. Provenance: Engraved heraldic bookplate at front pastedown (Duke of Arenberg/Elector of Northeim?); contemporary (1672?) dated owner's entry and old library stamp at fore-margin title; manuscript annotations in same hand at pp. 372 amidst the discussion of controversy between the Louvain faculty of theology and Jesuit professors Collation: [rev. paren.]4, 2[rev. paren.]2, A-3E4 (= 210 leaves). Expanded title: Fasti academici studii generalis lovaniensis, id est Origo & institutio. Rectores, cancellarii, conservatores, doctores & professores. editio iterata auctior et altera parte auctior.

A very good copy of a scarce title. $750. * First edition. This is the first edition of the celebrated commentary on Justinian's Institutes by Hendrik Zoes, a preeminent Dutch humanist jurist and rector of the University of Louvain. Zoes was a central figure in the 17th-century legal landscape; his commentaries on the Code, Digest, and the Decretals of Gregory IX were staple texts in European legal education for decades. This edition is particularly notable for the "perpetual additions" by the editor, Valerius Andreas (Dessel), which integrate the jus commune with the customary laws (jure consuetudinario) of the Low Countries. This synthesis of Roman law and local practice highlights the practical application of Humanist jurisprudence in the early modern period. Tremblay [1971-2011] was a Sorbonne-educated French linguist renowned for his contributions to Iranian and Indo-European studies. He won two important prizes in his field during his brief life: the Figdor Prize and the Prix Emile Benveniste. All 17th-century editions of Zoes's Institutionum are scarce.
