Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Very Good Plus. Second Edition. No stated date c1855. Presumed second edition. vii, 139, [ii], 436pp., frontispiece and 7 plates (including a list of Martyrs), and tail piece illustrations. The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, situated approximately 1 mile offshore, and 3 miles north-east of North Berwick. The rock is uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and the site of an important castle, which after the Commonwealth period was used as a prison. The island belongs to Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, whose family acquired it in 1706, and before to the Lauder family for almost six centuries. This book is a study of the Bass Rock, written by four respected authors. It starts with a History of the Bass by Thomas M'Crie (1797-1875), a Presbyterian minister and church historian; this is followed by an account of the Geology of the Bass by Hugh Miller (1802-1856), the famous Scottish geologist and writer; there is then a fascinating section on the Martyrs of the Bass (historical notices of 39 prisoners confined on the Bass) by James Anderson. The book closes with notices of the natural history of the rock - zoology by Professor John Fleming and botany by Professor John H. Balfour. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a blind stamped illustration of the Bass Rock on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered but mostly light foxing, including some marks on the frontispiece and title-page. The plate facing page 409 and a few pages near the start and end of the book are moderately affected. There is a personal name stamp on the front free endpaper. At the time of listing there is some Bass related ephemera loosely inserted at the front of the book.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. A particularly substantial and extensively illustrated Victorian edition of John Howie's celebrated Scots Worthies, the classic collection of biographies commemorating the leading figures of Scotland's Reformation and Covenanting history. First published in 1775, Howie's work preserved the lives and testimonies of reformers, ministers, Covenanters and martyrs who struggled for Presbyterianism and religious liberty in Scotland during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This enlarged edition, edited by the prominent Scottish Presbyterian historian and author Rev. J. A. Wylie (1808-1890), considerably extends the original work with additional biographies and historical notes, together with Wylie's substantial introductory history of the period. Among the figures represented are John Knox and many of the leading personalities of the Scottish Reformation and Covenanting movements. Particularly impressive in this large-format edition are its numerous full-page portraits and historical illustrations, together with a folding facsimile of the National Covenant. Wylie was a prolific historian of Protestantism and is best remembered for his multi-volume History of Protestantism, making his editorship particularly appropriate to Howie's strongly Presbyterian account of Scottish history. The Scots Worthies; Their Lives and Testimonies. Including Many Additional Notes and Lives of Eminent Worthies Not Contained in the Original Collection. Edited by the Rev. J. A. Wylie, LL.D., assisted by Rev. James Anderson. With an Introductory Sketch of the History of the Period by the Editor. Published by William Mackenzie, London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Undated, but thought to be 1876 (from National Library of Scotland / Worldcat). Printed in Glasgow. A good, and very substantial, hardback with black leather spine and corners, with cloth over boards featuring John Knox gilt portrait to front. Spine with raised bands, and tooled gilt decoration to compartments. Covers are scuffed and bumped and cloth colour faded with some soiling. Binding is completely sound. Some spotting to endpapers, and offsetting to tissue guards from Plates. The Plates themselves remain very good indeed with just the very occasional scattered spot. With gilt edges all round. The fold-out featuring the covenant has a tear where it meets the gutter and has an archival tape repair to rear. Text in English. (iv) titles/contents + 8pp Recommendations to this edition + lxxxiv + 872pp + 30 Plates, all but one with bound-in tissue guards, including frontispiece of John Knox and fold-out facsimile of the Covenant. All Plates present as called for. Dimensions: approximately: 292mm high x 241mm wide x 65mm deep. Weight: approximately 3.43kg (unpacked). Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 872 pages (complete). A stout, sturdy copy of this book that would not look out of place in spirit and reality, on an alter. Please note that the worthies are Calvinist sayers, preachers, heavyweights. So no Robert Burns for example! Full leather. The boards are scuffed, worn a little about the edges and seams. Whilst the leather responds well to wax, the leathers are a little dulled and solemn. The spine has five ridges, some shelving wear, some handling rubbing, some scuffing, some aging. It is flexible and fit. Marbled end papers. The papertrims are generously gilded (agleam). The inside front pastedown has a leather patch / plate showing indication of previous ownership by a Daniel Carney. The contents are very mildly aged. There are handling, aging marks about. The folded Charter of Covenant is much worn, and is rather tatty (it is secure). In general, and by far, the contents are fresh, clean, bold, very confident, pious, benevolent, pleasing. Please note that due to the weight of the book, should the book need posting outside of South Africa, extra postage charges will be required. fk. Añadir al carritoLeather. Condición: Very Good. A handsome half-calf edition of this profusely illustrated work on significant female Covenanters in seventeenth-century Scotland. Handsomely bound in half red calf with cloth boards. Delightfully illustrated with a frontispiece, fourteen further plates and numerous additional vignettes. Lacking the plate to face page 439. A fascinating, historical glimpse into the important female Covenanters of seventeenth-century Scotland. Written by Scottish author and minister James Anderson, also remembered as a significant early Freemason. Handsomely bound in half red calf with cloth boards. Contemporary inscriptions to front paste down and endpapers, dated 1857. Externally, smart with slight bumping and rubbing, leading to minor loss of leather, light marking, and the beginnings of cracking to the rear joint. Internally, generally firmly bound with slight weakness to hinges, affecting the first and last few pages and periodically throughout the text, page 439 being especially delicate. Light sporadic spotting throughout, heaviest to the front and rear. Very Good. Not Stated (ilustrador). book.…
