Studies in the Mediaeval Diagnosis of Leprosy in Denmark: An Osteoarchaeological, Historical, and Clinical Study is a scholarly monograph by Danish physician Johs. G. Andersen, published in Copenhagen by Costers Bogtrykkeri in 1969. The book represents a doctoral dissertation/thesis, as indicated by the printed notice of defense ("Forsvaret finder sted i auditoriet på Medicinsk Historisk Museum, Bredgade 62, tirsdag den 9. december 1969") - meaning the defense took place at the Medical History Museum in Copenhagen on Tuesday, December 9, 1969. The work combines skeletal (osteoarchaeological) evidence, historical medical texts, and clinical analysis to trace how leprosy was identified and diagnosed in medieval Denmark. The text draws heavily on classical and medieval sources, quoting extensively from ancient authorities such as Pliny and Aretaeus on the treatment and description of lepra and elephantiasis, with side-by-side Latin/French/English passages and clinical commentary connecting ancient descriptions to modern leprosy classifications (e.g., tuberculoid and lepromatous types). This cross-referencing of archaeology, philology, and clinical medicine makes it a notable reference work in the history of paleopathology and medieval disease diagnosis. Condition & Binding: The book is presented in the original green paper-covered wrappers/boards, printed in black with the title, author name, and an emblem/seal on the front cover; this matches the seal appearing on the title page (a diamond-shaped medical society device). The book is in good condition overall, with light shelf wear and a small mark/spot near the top right corner of the front cover; the text block and interior pages are clean. Notably, this copy is inscribed by the author on the half-title/limitation page: "Dear Dan, For good friendship - for into the future - thanks, Johs.". Overall- very good.…
