Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Very Large Book. To open the pages of this magnificently illustrated book is to enter the magical world of natural history. And it is to be guided among all the myriad marvels of the earth by an eloquent commentator, backed by the prodigious resources of a great institution- the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. This extraordinary museum, which attracts five million visitors a year, is a repository of wonders beyond counting and almost beyond description. it contains specimens of virtually every plant and animal- extant or extinct- ever seen on earth. The earliest fossil known to man is here, and the oldest rock yet found. There's a flying reptile with a 40-foot wingspan and the world's one remaining "dragon." The legendary Hope Diamond is here, and the hide of General Pershing's horse. There are rocks drilled clear through by lightning and iridescent butterflies whose colorless wings refract light like prisms. In The Ntionl Museum of Natural History, Philip Kopper, while casting light on Particular exhibits, explorers far wider horizons. Indeed he gives the reader a broad and illuminating overview of the naturl sciences as they are practiced today. We learn, for example, about scientists who work with acids to release ancient trilobites from stone and about others who use the dentist;s drill to remove creatures the size of hippos from solid rock, millimeter by millimeter. Moreover, the author informs us about all the fascination aspects of the life of the Museum itself: its evolution from the time of James Smithson's bequest, its methods of research, conservation, and taxonomy, and the design and construction of areas such as the new Dinosaur Hall. He discusses new Dinosaur Hall. He discusses why and how things re collected, what purposes the collections serve, how changing scientific knowledge generates startling new insights about old specimens. ragon." The legendary Hope Diamond is here, and the hide of General Pershing's horse. There are rocks drilled clear through by lightning and iridescent butterflies whose colorless wings refract light like prisms." (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: VG+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: VG+. 3rd. Publication of this book, co-authored by Alan Bramson and Neville Birch, in 1964 told for the first the full story of the Tiger Moth (TM), which became famous as a World War Two training aircraft. Since then numerous books on the TM have appeared with few unfolding the story to the extent of the Bramson/Birch joint effort. For that reason it remains a standard reference of the aircraft to this day. Their account runs from the conception, the sometimed dfficult gestation stages, through the various experimental TM till the standard model emerged late in the 1930s. By the time WWII began it had already proved popular with private owners and flying clubs, and as a RAF trainer. War may have brought fame to the TM. but for many years after it continued as a successful civilian and military trainer and was adopted to many uses including agricultural work, glider towing, in-flight advertising, wing walking and giving aerobatic displays. to name a few. As a warrior the TM had already served in numerous roles such as coastal patrol, makeshift bomber and air ambulance. In this aviation classic no source of information slipped by in compiling this comprehensive account. The TM was to become a prize for vintage aircraft collectors, which has ensured the survival of the breed in static displays, with some still airworthy today. Almost 9000 TM were manufactured, some in licenced production in Commonweath coutries. The book is outstanding for factors other than the story it tells. Its several appendices include lists for service and reserve flying schools using the TM 1937-54, production summaries for UK and overseas, works and registration numbers for UK and overseas orders and those produced in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The first edition was followed by a reprint in 1965, with this third revised and updated edition appearing in 1970. It contained 12 additional pages of text, 12 pages of added photographs and the extensive appendices which include registration numbers, date of manufacture, owners, works or service numbers and, where known, the name/address, registrations and works numbers of 250 TMs with current CofAs in 22 countries at September 1970. Third edition has 268 pages, illustrated with almost 90 b/w photos, several technical drawings and cut-aways including power plants, camouflace schemes, three views- and a family tree of DH aircraft leading to the ultimate TM. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions. VG+ DJ had art front panel photo to rear. Small section clipped from lower front flap.
