The Bacyk collection is probably the most extensive assemblage of powder cans, kegs and related memorabilia in existe…nce. The quantity, rarity and scope make this collection extraordinary. There has been considerable activity over the years in this area, by various collectors, and some other notable collections have been amassed. Many firearms, sporting art and tin collectors also have powder can and keg collections of varying sizes. To date, there have been minimal references for these collectors to determine rarity or value of cans and kegs. In this book, we have focused on the major American manufacturers: du Pont, Laflin & Rand, American Powder, King and Hazard, plus their related companies. Included in the book is some historical data from other sources which will give the reader some of the more interesting background of these companies as well as a rarity and price guide (as of the publication date of the book). We found that we could not cover all the collection in one volume, and hope to complete another on the smaller American companies. West Coast mills and foreign manufacturers at a later date. We illustrate and detail the hammerless rifles that are true gems of the gunmaker's art. We continue with the diminutive and rare falling blocks in the rook size. A couple of pages are also devoted to some of the American rifles that were imported for this sport. A large section covers the small action Martinis that captured so much of the market and became important both for short range and gallery target use. A selection of the rare rook-size and miniature double rifles are shown. Ammunition that was used in these rifles as well as loading data and how to maker cartridges from currently available brass in discussed. Also the adapters to be used to allow military rifles to use low-power, rook type cartridges. Also included is a chapter that shows the beautifully made reloading tools that accompanied these rifles. Finally, a section is devoted to shooting these rifles today, both in the u.K. and the U.S. Loading information and the types of matches held. A wonderful book.

These are the small caliber rifles kn…own as Rook Rifles. A previous book by colin Greenwoood has been published, which is excellent, but we are going to delve into much more detail with a lot more examples photographed. As nothing has been done previously on their larger brothers the Miniature Rifles, and there is so much overlap, we are including them also. When we started this project we weren't aware of how historically important these little rifles were. In this book we cover the early percussion and air rifle types and then get into the fascinating story of the needle fires. Why these were so important to the British trade as well as future cartridge design is covered in detail. We then cover the various developments in more traditional cartridge rifles through the center hammer break open designs. Also included is a large section devoted to additional information and corrections of material covered in previous books in this series as well as a few pages devoted to simple photography techniques. As this story is so large we have had to make two volumes. Volume 8 (to be published) will conclude the story. That book covers the hammerless rifles, ammunition and reloading and shooting the rook rifle today. We have also included a few recipes for those that would like to prepare a rook dinner.
