"The port of Kaiapoi has a history…that begins before the arrival of European settlers in the early 1850s. Maori trading parties used the Cam, Waimakariri and Styx Rivers as an inland water route to settlements further north. In 1849, the first coastal trading vessels from Wellington and Nelson crossed the Waimakariri bar to bring supplies to Captain Thomas's surveyors conducting the 'Mandeville Survey' in the Kaiapoi area. By the 1860s, Kaiapoi was the main port for the farms and stations of North Canterbury and the fleet of small cutters, schooners and ketches maintained a lively trade with Lyttelton as well as Christchurch via the Heathcote River."--Book flap.
