"There probably are 'over 100,000' if you count every little company in a church basement or whatever in a given year." Though Peter Zeisler at Theatre Communication Group knows how many "regional professional theaters" there are, it's impossible to know how many amateur groups there are, especially if one considers "theater to be every high school that puts on at least one play a year." The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. Roughly cropped, the autograph is mounted with glue from the verso of the corners onto slightly larger paper likely clipped from an album. Good. The American stage actress Marie Wainwright (1853-1923) first achieved fame on the Victorian stage. Educated in France, Wainwright made her stage debut in "Romeo and Juliet" and later played the leading female roles opposite Edwin Booth, Lawrence Barrett, and Tommaso Salvani. She had a brief screen career in silent movies late in life.…

Condición: Very good. - A slip of cream paper approximately 3 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide is boldly signed in black ink "Fanny Davenport / 1886". The paper is mounted on a piece of card of the same size. Remnants of paper adhere to the verso of the mount & a small area of its surface is rubbed away where it has been removed from an album. The paper is slightly rippled from the mounting & there is some very light glue staining to its top right corner. Very good. Fanny Davenport [1850-1898] was an Anglo-American actress, born in London and brought to the United States in 1854. She made her debut in 1862 at the age of 12, appearing as the King of Spain in "Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady" at Niblo's Garden in New York City. In 1869 she joined Augustin Daly's company and later, with a company of her own, appeared with great success in Sardou's "Fedora" [1883]. She took over emotional Sardou roles that had been originated in Europe by Sarah Bernhardt. Her last appearance was at the Grand Opera House in Chicago in March 1898, not long before her death.…

Rare playbill for Miss Bateman's (Kate Bateman [1842-1917], American actress) from Her Majesty's Theatre, London, for her farewell benefit 'prior to her departure for America and retirement from the stage'. For this performance, she played Juliet in 'Romeo and Juliet'. In addition, her sisters, Virginia and Isabella, 'will make their first and only appearance on any stage' in 'Little Daisy. Kate Bateman was born into a theatrical family in Baltimore and, with her sister Ellen, became a child actress. In 1859, she scored successes on stage in Boston and New York and in 1863, came to England. Although the playbill states she was about to retire and return to America, in fact, she remained in England, marrying an Englishman, George Crowe, son of the journalist Eyre Evans Crowe. She retired for only two years, returning to work with Henry Irving at the Lyceum, which, at that time, was managed by her father, H.L. Bateman. Irving seems to have been unimpressed by the Bateman sisters, however, and they left for Sadler's Wells with their mother after the death of their father, and Irving took over the Lyceum, which he turned into the most important theatre in London. Kate appeared in several productions at Sadler's Wells, but was forced to retire again from the stage due to illness, only appearing intermittently over her final years. The bill has a central horizontal fold, a discrete tape repair verso at the top and one small hole, midway down the bottom half, not affecting the text. Some edgewear, but overall a nice, scarce item of this American acting family in England's history. …

American stage actress Mary Anderson [1859-1940] made her debut in the role of Shakespeare's Juliet at Macauley's Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky, her family's home town. Further appearances at St. Louis, New Orleans and John McCullough's theatre in San Francisco led to a contract with John T. Ford. After starring as Lady Macbeth in his Washngton theatre in 1877, she began an extensive U.S. tour, culminating with a New York engagement in Edward Bulwer Lytton's "The Lady of Lyons". She immediately became popular with the public as "Our Mary" and thereafter enjoyed a twelve-year career of unbroken success in New York and on tour. After collapsing on stage from nervous exhaustion in 1889, she retired to England, married Antonio Fernando de Navarro and started a family. She resisted encouragement to return to the stage apart from some benefit performances during World War I. Very good. The wife of the Argentine-American actor and director Fernando Lamas, Arlene Dahl Lamas (1925-2021) was an American actress. The couple divorced in 1960 after giving birth to one child. Dahl starred in "My Wild Irish Rose", "The Bride Goes Wild", "Caribbean Gold" and "Desert Legion" among other films and founded 2 companies including Dahl Enterprises and the fragrance company Dahlia. She later wrote a syndicated column on astrology and operated a premium phone-line company. Dahl was the author of several books on beauty and astrology.…
