"This book … makes clear that video, the nonbroadcast use of television, is a very young and self-conscious art form. In common with other contemporary art, video users are somewhat pre-occupied with the use of its own marks and materials: specialization in technique is dominant. Many of the contributors examine their work, making references in a historical context to the performances and tapes of other video artists, first noting the precedents of painting, film and architecture, etc. and then explaining in their own terms their individual activities, almost it seems to find out exactly what they think they are doing. Television technology is mirrored in video when it shows off its attractive electronic features by literally turning the camera onto itself in an act of synthesized feedback, plus other circuit configurations. Video is therefore rich in introspective details: its own technological process speaking for an artist. Russel Connor, describing the WNET Television Laboratory, calls it 'the most sophisticated electronic palette for the exploration of the medium itself. Robert Pincus-Witten remarks that the early generation of video artists had first to provide the tools - Nam June Paik's work on the synthesizer for instance. John Baldessari suggests that the video medium become a neutral tool at the service of artists and Allan Kaprow that it become as familiar as the telephone. Many hopes are expressed that video can break down the elitist approach to rare and inaccessible artworks. The Editors have brought together 39 contributors under three main headings: (1) The Aesthetics of Television, (2) The Support Structure: Change and Resistance and the International Setting, (3) The Politics, Philosophy and Future of Television…."
