Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides the first in-depth exploration of the influence of Spanish literature on Restoration drama, using as its primary example a close reading of The Adventures of Five Hours by Samuel Tuke. Before the 1660s, the English stage had long been influenced by major European playwrights, but no direct influence from Spain could be found. This all changed, however, with the publication of The Adventures of Five Hours, which arrived to considerable acclaim and commercial success and is now seen as the instigator of a new wave of Spanish-influenced plays which would follow. Samuel Tuke's work was also groundbreaking in its strict adherence to the neo-classical demand for unity of time, which insisted that plays must adhere to a single day. The Adventures of Five Hours was the first English-language play to achieve this, as well as the first to adopt from Spanish drama the pairing of tragic and comic elements and the use of mistaken identity for comedic effect. The scholars assembled here provide insightful commentary on this and other thematic motifs, placing The Adventure of Five Hours in its rich literary and historical context and exploring the many reasons for its enduring significance to scholars of Restoration-era drama. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'The Origin and Development of 1 Henry VI' is a detailed scholarly examination of one of William Shakespeare's earliest chronicle plays. Written by Allison Gaw, Ph.D., this study delves into the complex textual history and authorship questions surrounding the first part of the Henry VI trilogy. The work meticulously analyzes the play's structure, stylistic variations, and historical sources to determine how the text evolved into its final form within the context of Elizabethan theater.
