The very scarce first edition, first printing of this work. In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper. A farcical three act comedy from Allen Boretz and John Murray, following a producer living on credit with a group of actors in a New York hotel, looking for an angel investor with $15,000. It was made into a film of the same name in 1938, and then adapted into a musical film in 1944 starring Frank Sinatra, called 'Step Lively'. From the library of Clive Hirschhorn, theatre critic at the Sunday Express from 1966 to 1995, and a noted book collector of 20th century authors, with his collection including all the major works of Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck and others. With Clive's characteristic inscription with his date of acquisition to the upper corner of the front pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, exceptional, with minor closed tear to back strip head. Pencil inscription to front pastedown head. Dust wrapper back strip a touch age toned, with small loss to back strip head, and closed tears to centre of back strip. Tape repairs to dust wrapper reverse at flyleaf folds, with front flyleaf tenderly held due to closed tear at fold. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Near Fine. book.

The novel was later adapted into the 1947 film noir "The Gangster," with a screenplay written by Fuchs and Dalton Trumbo. Set in the fictional boardwalk town of Neptune Beach, Brooklyn. Marx plays an incompetent theatrical agent whose only client is Carmen Miranda, in her first film after leaving Twentieth Century-Fox, and who he tries to pass off as two different performers. Set in New York City, and shot there on location. Tan titled wrappers, noted as Final Draft on the front wrapper, dated October 28, 1946. Based on "Princess O'Hara," a short story by Damon Runyon, previously adapted by Universal in 1935. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. 10 x 8 inches.
