Top edges gilt; deckle fore-edges. Marbled endpapers. Sewn-in red silk… ribbon page markers (although marker in ELIA is separated). All six volumes have "Bound by Zaehnsdorf for A.C. McClurg & Co." discreetly stamped at each front free endpaper verso's bottom left. Some rubbing and light soiling to boards; scuffs to spine ends and bands as well as at board corners and along joints; a few volumes have edge chipping to their title and/or author brown compartment labels; LETTERS VOL. I and MRS. LEICESTER'S SCHOOL have very shallow chipping at their spine heads with latter having tearing at top of front joint with surface leather slightly pulling away from underlying backstrip. Light toning at margins of leaves with some still uncut at their fore-edges; "7" handwritten in pencil on a rear page of each volume but no other such marks readily apparent upon a quick perusal. MRS. LEICESTER'S SCHOOL AND OTHER WRITINGS IN PROSE AND VERSE BY CHARLES LAMB WITH INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY ALFRED AINGER. London-1897; third printing of the 1885 edition; xiv, 411 pages. POEMS PLAYS AND MISCELLANEOUS ESSAYS OF CHARLES LAMB WITH INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY ALFRED AINGER. London-1902; fourth printing of the 1882 edition; xxiv, 408 pages. London-1906; thirteenth printing of the 1883 edition; xxvi; 425 pages. Still a handsome set and sold with all six volumes as found. As five of the six have different copyright dates it would seem that this set was compiled by Zaehnsdorf-McClurg rather than being a group simultaneously issued by Macmillan - other contemporary Lamb-Ainger Macmillan sets found online vary as to number of volumes but a few have as many as twelve. London bookbinder Joseph William Zaehnsdorf (1853-1930) continued the Covent Garden bookbindery founded by his father Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886). Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 8.25 pounds (3.74 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
