Hardcover. Condición: New in shrinkwrap. Navy blue boards, blue & color illustrated dust jacket with cream lettering. 192 pp. 160 BW and 40 color illustrations. "This collection of contemporary drawings, plans and paintings, together with modern photographs, will come as a shock to a Western audience familiar with the architectural achievements of the Constructivist period but still unacquainted with those of the 1930s through the 1940s. While the skyscrapers which tower over Moscow are the most obvious architectural legacy of Stalin's reign, the most interesting aspect for the contemporary reader. is the history of the enormous architectural competitions which proved such crucial tools in the propagandistic mass culture of the era. Most of the grandiose visions reproduced here remained unbuilt; yet even in the form of perspective views they convey the atmosphere of their time with great power." (dj).…

About the book >.>.> Stalinist Architecture Book by Alexei TarkhanovStalinist Architecture examines the architecture of Stalin?s reign, with particular attention to the history and propaganda role of ambitious architectural schemes. Although many of the projects remained unbuilt, their reproduced designs and evocative views convey the atmosphere of the period and show how architecture formed part of its mass culture. Alexei Tarkhanov and co-author Kaviaradze place Stalinist architecture in historical context, comparing it with such sources as Albert Speer?s plans for a new Berlin and Renaissance architecture. The discussion considers classical allusions in Soviet projects, including the combination of the Doge?s Palace and Trajan?s Column in a proposed palace for the Soviet people. The book also addresses the era?s monumental visions and their relationship to the built environment, including the imposing buildings that remain among the most visible architectural legacies of Stalin?s rule.
