It focusses mainly on the last half of the eighteenth century, when Williamsburg was the bustling capital of the Virginia Colony, and Patrick Henry resided in the Governor's Mansion. Grand plantations were flourishing along the James River, while in the wilderness, pioneers struggled against the elements of nature and the savages of the land they were trying to tame. The information was gathered mainly from pioneers and their children, thereby preserving these early family and local traditions. This book also covers the early history of Virginia and major events and leaders such as George Washington and some of the men who served with him before and after the Revolution. It appears to be the original binding, from the remote 1831 outpost of Clarksburg - which was Virginia at the time but is West Virginia now. Text block tight, but pages much toned and foxed and stained. They are legible, but they have been through a lot. Title page dated 1831. No other dates. 319 pages plus a publisher's advertisement. Withers (1792-1865) is considered by Western antiquarians to form the best account of frontier life and Indian warfare that has been printed.** An excellent example of the genre of frontier history, the book focuses on the American settlement throughout the northwestern portion of colonial Virginia (an area which today encompasses parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) from the French and Indian War to the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and the ensuing clashes with the indigenous population. While the watershed events of the advancing frontier (the arrival of scouts, establishment of forts, and the ultimate triumph of the U.S. Army) give a structure to Withers' account, what the book is really about are detailed, often grisly, descriptions of contacts between the races. The spine has a crackled appearance, and the title plate is difficult to read. The front endpaper is cracked along the hinge, but all pages remain attached. The front endpaper has a few notes and a former owner name in pencil, and the rear free endpaper is loose. The pages are somewhat delicate from age, so that there are chips along the margins of the first and last few pages. Tanning and moderate foxing throughout.
