A Southern Gothic story filmed in Louisiana, in CinemaScope color and based on three works by William Faulkner: the 1931 novella "Spotted Horses", the 1939 short story "Barn Burning" and the 1940 novel *The Hamlet.* During filming, Ritt succeeded at getting a temperamental Welles to cooperate on set, earning him the nickname "the Orson Tamer". Newman won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. …
