THIS BOOK IS PARTLY IN RUSSIAN, PARTLY IN ENGLISH. 314 pages, with 50-page Russian-English glossary, editors' introduction in English to each Russian-language memoir excerpt. Intended for second-year students, the Russian texts have word-stresses marked. A "minimum vocabulary" lists 1000 most common words in Russian, which the reader is expected to know. Two other groups of words (by frequency) have special marks, and are given their English translation in the margin. Each excerpt has a "get ready" exercise in which several paragraphs are fully translated into English, and after it a "questions on what's been read", in Russian. The memoirs include 19th and 20th century figures such as Herzen, Kropotkin, Chaliapine, Wrangel. Trade paperback, shelf wear, wraps a bit faded, binding supple. One handwritten notation on the front cover, old price on the half-title, a couple of stray marks to pages.
