Clean pages except for one short corner fold, a clear droplet stain on the head edge of the page block, and a scattering of tiny tea spots on the foreedge; no owners' marks; square, tight binding (note that the book appears to have accordion-style binding but is stitched along one edge, untrimmed on the other, because it was printed on one side only - trimming along the foreedges would merely reveal unprinted surfaces). The quarter cloth hard cover shows a few specks along the head edges, otherwise excellent, with a clear plastic cover to protect boards and printed cummerbund; the former has a small, open tear at the spine head, and the latter is faded at the spine but otherwise crisp and fresh. 173pp. Still hilarious after 120 years.

The boards have small tape marks at the top and bottom of the rear panel and some light surface marking - the book may have been in a lending library but three are no stamps on it. Light browning to the page edges. Traces of label residue to the front free endpaper and there is a patch of surface damage to the bottom left corner of the front pastedown. Vertical tape marks down the length of left edge of the front pastedown and the centre of the rear pastedown with some marking from this on the rear free endpaper. The pages are otherwise unmarked. The jacket has small tears at the top of the spine and to the top right corner of the front panel and a half inch closed tear at the bottom edge of the rear panel. Fading to the red lettering on the spine and a little light surface wear to the front and rear panels. First printing.
