This volume captures the post Soviet transformation of central Asia and examines various developments that have brought the region into international prominence. Of the three parts the first one analyse the internal dimensions of transformation and concentrates on the political apparatus and state structures economic aspects problems of ethnicity and nationalism and the role of religion and its transnational linkages in central Asia. The second part explores the strategic context of central Asia and focusses especially on cooperation and competition between various regional and extra regional powers particularly the US Russia and China in their attempts to enhance influence over the region and gain control over the hydrocarbon reserves. This section also probes the relations of the central Asian states with the neighbouring countries Turkey Pakistan Iran and Afghanistan. The third section of the volume deals exclusively with Indo central Asian relations. It focusses primarily on new policy challenges confronted by India after the emergence of independent states in the Eurasian region especially in the context of great power interplay and the continuously changing Eurasian strategic landscape. Apart from India's security concerns the chapters in this section also emphasise the economic aspects of Indo central Asian relations. 354 pp.

The disintegration of the union of Soviet Socialist Republics was an unprecedented epoch-making event of twentieth century The sudden dismantle of the Soviet Union resulted in creation of a situation of uncertainty in the vast Eurasian space During the seven decades of the Soviet rule Tajikistan remained free from ethno-national… and internecine conflicts But since its independence Tajikistan has passed through a very painful period of transition which resulted in the division of its people into rival and antagonistic clans and finally outbreak of the most devastated Civil WarAt the initial stage of the internecine conflict in Tajikistan Russia had not defined its stand for quite some time This was attributable to a number of reasons both objectives and subjective in their essence Subsequently Russia declared that despite its withdrawal from Central Asia It cant ignore its strategic concern geo-political links and collective security interests for maintaining stability within the region and no regional power can supplant Moscows preferential status Moreover the down fall of the Democratic-Islamic coalition government in December 1992 and further consolidation of pro-Communist forces in Tajikistan headed by Imomali Rahmanov was not only a watershed in the Tajikistan civil War but also signalled a qualitatively new stage in the involvement of Russia in shaping the political and security dynamics of the regionAs a result it was only after pressure from Russia that negotiation process between the Tajik government headed by President Imomali Rahmanov and representative of the United Tajik Opposition began Subsequently several rounds of inter-Tajik peace talks under the aegis of the United Nations were held at different places Finally it was on June 27 1997 the Moscow Peace Accord was signed by Tajik President Imomali Rahmanov United Tajik Opposition leader Syed Abdullo Nuri and the United Nations envoy for Tajikistan Gerd Dietrich Merrem which formally ended the five years old internecine conflict in the RepublicRussia the most trusted foreign partner maintained an important Political position in Tajikistan During the course of civil war while Russias position was officially one of neutrality some observers feel that Tajikistan became essentially a protectorate of Russia as a result of conflict.
