The cover illustration of the Hotel El Tovar by Louis Benton Akin was taken from a large, 22 x 40 inch, chromolithograph published by W. J. Black, American Lithographic Co., 1906. Around 1903, Akin relocated to the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. He lived with the Hopi for a few years and painted many aspects of their daily life. By 1905 he was showing his works in New York City, Philadelphia, and elsewhere. In the same year, his talent was discovered by Arizona Railways that funded him to portrait a sketch on Indians to highlight significance of the region as a tourist destination. He toured the area to paint his famed paintings Hopi and other life-depicting portraits. His artwork depicting the life of Indians were admiringly adopted by the Railways advertisement printouts. For the rest of his life, Akin alternated time between New York City and Arizona, with a few trips to North American wilderness areas. Akin became known for numerous landscapes of the Grand Canyon, but also painted the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park.…

First edition. Louis Akin Grand Canyon 1906, surely one of his grandest efforts, painted for the Santa Fe Railroad. Louis Benton Akin (18681913) was born in Portland, Oregon, beginning his early career as a sign painter. In 1893, he moved to New York City, where he attended the Art League of New York, where he studied with William Merritt Chase. After working as an illustrator, he moved to the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona, living with them for a few years and painting many aspects of their daily life. His association with the Santa Fe Railroad led him to paint numerous landscapes of the Grand Canyon. This image of "El Tovar", the hotel designed by Charles Whittlesey, is still in operation within the Grand Canyon National Park. The glorious soaring landscape is balanced with the Hopi people walking up the path on the left. Framed in the period green painted wood frame, with a gold filet and the period brass plaque "El Tovar Grand Canyon Arizona on the Santa Fe". This is the largest edition of the print ~ another was issued that is about one-quarter the size. The image is 17 x 35 1/2", the frame measuring 24 x 42 1/2". Not viewed outside the frame but appears to be in very good condition.…

Else fine (not examined out of frame) in an old oak frame with a brass title-plaque.Louis Benton Akin (1868-1912) was born in Oregon but trained in New York before settling in Arizona, whose climate beguiled and healed him. The present item is perhaps Akin's most famous: the El Tovar hotel, designed by Charles Frederick Whittlesey, which had opened the year before and still operates today. Along the path at left are Hopi figures approaching the hotel.The Grand Canyon, viewed here from the South Rim, recedes into the distance, dissolving into atmospheric perspective. The print is also found in a larger format (about quadruple the size) but the present issue is, perhaps, more intimate and hushed as befits Akin's own attitude to the healing Southwest.…
