Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Jacket by Doris Borosky after Hans Holbein Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear and fading to top and bottom of jacket and spine, slight yellowing to page block, contents very slightly shaken, corners slightly rubbed and bruised, not price clipped (no published price), small old charity stamp to ffep, internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg copy for it's age. 932pp. The story of England's most famous and notorious, king. The facts of Henry VIII's life and reign were more astonishing, poignant and outlandish than the plot twists of most fiction. Henry's character was complex, he was a charismatic, ardent, psychopathic, and brash young lover who married six times, a scholar with a deep love of poetry and music, an energetic hunter who loved the outdoors, a monarch whose lack of a male heir haunted him incessantly, the consequent fragility of the Tudor dynasty and he was a ruthless leader who would stop at nothing to achieve his desires. His monumental decision to split from Rome and the Catholic Church was one that would forever shape the religious and political landscape of Britain. Combining magnificent storytelling with an extraordinary grasp of the pleasures and perils of power, Margaret George delivers a vivid portrait of Henry VIII and Tudor England and the powerhouse of players on its stage. Thomas Cromwell, Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas More and Anne Boleyn. It is also a narrative told from an original perspective, Margaret George writes from the King's point of view, injecting irreverent comments from Will Somers, Henry's jester and confidant. By American historical novelist Margaret George (b. 1943). A large heavy hardback book, extra postage may be required.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Jacket by Leo Nickolls, cover after Holbein Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed, not price clipped (£14.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 238pp, illustrated. On 28th January 1547, the sickly and obese King Henry VIII died at Whitehall. Just hours before his passing, his last will and testament had been read, stamped and sealed. The will confirmed the line of succession as Edward, Mary and Elizabeth and, following them, the Grey and Suffolk families. It also listed bequests to the king's most trusted councillors and servants. Henry's will is one of the most intriguing and contested documents in British history. Historians have disagreed over its intended meaning, its authenticity and validity, and the circumstances of its creation. As well as examining the background to the drafting of the will and describing Henry's last days, Suzannah Lipscomb offers her own, illuminating interpretation of one of the most significant constitutional documents of the Tudor period. Quite a scarce book.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Declamatiunculae aliquot, eaedemq[ue] Latinae, per Des.Erasmum Rot. Cum duabus orationibus Lysiae itidem versis, incerto interprete, & aliis nonnullis. Basel, Johann Froben, March (at end: 1st May) 1522. 4to. [114]f. Greek text with Latin translation on opposite pages. With ornamental woodcut borders and historiated initials after Hans Holbein; ornamental title woodcut border signed by U[rs] G[raf]. Large printer's device at end. Contemporary blind-tooled half pigskin over oak boards. Erasmus proved his linguistic skills in his Latin version of the collected speeches on set topics by the 4th century Greek rhetorician Libanius, his first attempt at translating a classical text. Working from a Greek manuscript at Louvain University, he corrected several errors and omissions, for the first printing in 1519. The remaining errors were eliminated for this 2nd edition prepared by Froben, in which a number of passages were given a more accurate form. Libanius, who taught at Antioch and Constantinople, was regarded as a model of style both in Christian Byzantium and in Renaissance Europe. He was advisor to both the pagan emperor Julian (362-3) and the Christian emperor Theodosius I (379-393). The volume additionally contains Latin versions of Isocrates' Orations (by Petrus Mosellanus), the declamations of Lucian of Samosata by Erasmus, and the orations of Lysias. The Latin translations are printed facing the Greek texts on parallel pages. The splendid woodcut title border is illustrated in Walter Lüthi, Urs Graf, Zürich 1928. A good copy with a contemporary manuscript entry on title and contemporary manuscript notes in Greek in a few blank margins; occasional light traces of waterstaining in blank margins, otherwise well preserved in its original binding. Adams L-630. Hoffmann II, 519; VD16-L1480. Signed by Author(s).

Apparently created after Holbein portrait. ?Andrew Boorde, Boorde also spelled Borde (born c. 1490 - 1549), English physician and author of the first English guidebook to Europe.Boorde was educated at the University of Oxford and was admitted as a member of the Carthusian order while still a minor. In 1521 he was ?dispensed from religion? to act as suffragan bishop of Chichester, though he never filled the office, and in 1529 he was freed from his monastic vows, not being able to endure the hardships of religiosity. He visited the universities of Orléans, Poitiers, Toulouse, Montpellier, and Wittenberg, saw ?much abominable vices? at Rome, and went on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. In 1534 Boorde was again in London at the Charterhouse. Then the statesman Thomas Cromwell seems to have sent him to determine public feeling abroad about Henry VIII?s policies. In 1536, however, he was studying and practicing medicine at Glasgow.About 1538 Boorde again traveled extensively, visiting nearly all the countries of Europe and later making his way to Jerusalem. He settled for a time at Montpellier in France and before 1542 had completed his First Book of the Introduction of Knowledge, in prose and ?ryme doggerel? (1548), which ranks as the earliest continental guidebook. He also published Dietary of Health (1542?) and Breviary (1547). He probably returned to England in 1542. His imprisonment toward the end of his life may have been for keeping ?loose women? in his quarters at Winchester.? [-Encylopedia Britannica]. Citations: Folger 21105. Rare. We find no other copies of this particular print published by G. Smeeton, other copies (scarce as well) appear later than ours.
