First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine unread copy in a Fine dust jacket. This saga of black soldiers whose struggle to reach the front lines was shadowed by racism begins with debates among black leaders over whether African-Americans should withhold support for the war until steps toward equality were made, then follows the harrowing path of the 15th Regiment of Colored Infantryís formation which, lacking a proper armory, drilled in the streets of Harlem and a local dance hall. The 15th was ready to fight by 1917, but was forbidden from serving under U.S. command by General John J. Pershing, who handed over the re-named 369th to the French Army. This story of arms and a bandóled by jazz pioneer Lieutenant James Reese Europeóthat toured Europeís hospitals, villages, and cities, is an important portrait of the soldiers whose return to U.S. soil, complete with a spectacular parade up Fifth Avenue, helped fuel the Harlem Renaissance.…

4to. xiv, 151, [1] pp. Numerous photos, architectural renderings, and diagrams. Cream-coloured softcovers, w/ colour-illustrated softcovers (slight bowing to front cover), still VG/VG copy, from the Clark County Historical Society Collections, recently deaccessioned. First edition, 2nd printing, of this informative work examining the history of the largest public housing project in the United States built for workers in Kaiser shipyards during World War II, and due to racist Oregon state housing restrictions a significant majority of the shipyard's African-American workforce was confined to the segregated housing destroyed by the flood in 1948. Oregon and Portland were well known for their extreme restrictions of allowing African-Americans to settle in the State and Area, and in fact barred African-Americans from voting until the law was revoked in 1927, and continued redlining after the War ended which forced over 20,000 people to still remain living in what was originally intended to be temporary housing in Oregon's second largest city.…

Three reports from the Quakers during the Civil War on their ministry amongst the "Colored Refugees" of Virginia & Washington DC, reporting on the conditions and needs at Fort Monroe, Camp Barker, Craney Island, Alexandria, Hampton, Norfolk, etc. Conditions are tough in the refugee camps but none wish to return to where they have fled from. "Slaves have been abandoned and we must help. Don't we owe them for our prosperity--- enjoying indirectly from the unrequited labor of these people." Encyclopedia Virginia writes on their website- "In this report, dated May 1864, the Committee on Colored Refugees, who were representatives of the New York Yearly Meeting of Friends, gives its assessment of the needs of the formerly enslaved people escaping behind Union lines and how Quaker charity efforts were meeting them in contraband camps across Virginia, including Alexandria. One of their agents, Harriet Jacobs, wrote her own letter documenting what she saw in Alexandria and Washington, D.C. For Quakers, the abolition of slavery was a moral and religious imperative." Condición: Good. - 566 words typed on an eleven inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of Queens College letterhead. Signed "Hortense Powdermaker " with her name and "Chairman Department of Anthropology-Sociology" typed below the signature. There is light creasing to the top & bottom edges of the letter with a paperclip mark to the top edge. Powdermaker writes that she will be be happy to speak at Rugg's All-College Luncheon Forum. "Would you like me to talk about the 'Relationship of Hollywood to American Life' or 'The Relationship of Movies to American Life'" or something else?"Hortense Powdermaker [1900-1970] was an American anthropologist, best known for her ethnographic studies of African Americans in Indianola, Mississippi and of Hollywood. After studying at Goucher College and working as a labor organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers, she left the United States to study at the London School of Economics. While at LSE she worked under and was influenced by several well-known anthropologists, including Bronislaw Malinowski, who persuaded her to pursue doctoral studies. She completed her Ph.D. on "Leadership in Primitive Society" in 1928. Returning to the United States, she was given an appointment at the new Yale Institute of Public Relations. The institute's director Edward Sapir encouraged her to apply ethnographic field methods to the study of communities in her own society. As a result she conducted anthropological field work in an Indianola African American community, recording this work in "After Freedom: A Cultural Study in the Deep South" [1939]. Her other best known book, "Hollywood, the Dream Factory" [1950] was written while she was working at Queens College where she founded the departments of Anthropology and Sociology during a career spanning three decades. One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg (1886-1960) was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940s.…

A collection of thirteen real photo postcards featuring young African American Navy midshipmen serving or training during World War II, twelve of which have been signed by the subjects in the margin below their photographs. Seven of the men have also added their address below their names, while one serviceman inscribed his to "Mr. Strong." The sailors hail from a variety of locations, namely Tennessee, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Illinois, Maryland, and New York (two from Brooklyn). The men are all posed, likely against a studio backdrop, and each is dressed in a blue uniform and white hat. The United States Navy was much slower to welcome African-American servicemen and integrate than the Army. In 1942, the Navy expanded service opportunities for African Americans beyond mess service, and Camp Robert Smalls was created within Naval Station Great Lakes to host the first full, albeit segregated, training programs. The Navy began desegregating training in 1944, with the first thirteen African Americans becoming commissioned and warrant officers that same year (the "Golden Thirteen"). By 1945, all training was fully integrated. A useful group of photographs signed by African-American midshipmen of the Greatest Generation, braving the American Navy during a transformative time in its history. Moderate surface wear and silvering to some photos, minor edge wear. Overall very good.…

N.p. (Virginia?): S.n., Copyright January 21, 1903. Illustrated Broadside of a Fictional African American Courtroom Scene in "Negro" Dialect [Broadside]. [African Americans]. [Virginia]. Trial of Richard Wilson by John Malone, Colored Magistrate. N.p. (Virginia?): S.n., Copyright January 21, 1903. 14" x 11" (36 cm x 28 cm) broadside mounted on thick-paper board, large halftone photographic image above headline and two-column text, sections divided by ornamental rules. Moderate toning, faint spotting, light wear to corners, faint stain, small tear and gouge to right-side edge. $1,500. * A typical example of racist dialect story, but with an uncommon legal theme, this "humorous" broadside presents a "court report" of a fictional trial with African American parties, witnesses and court officers. Richard Wilson, who claims "I never stole nothing from de cradle to de cross," is accused of stealing a pair of women's shoes belonging to "Bettie Brown" from the "steer cart of James Jones." After much confused testimony, Wilson is cleared by circumstantial evidence: no one was able to disprove his claim that "dem things" just "drap out de cart." The photograph is not a trial scene; it is of a large African American family, likely sharecroppers, along with two white men. OCLC locates 2 copies (Virginia Historical Society, Yale Law School). Washington, DC: Scurlock Studio, [1944]. A Rare 1944 Class Portrait of the Robert H. Terrell Law School, Produced by the Celebrated Scurlock Studio [Law Schools]. [African Americans]. Class of 1944. Robert H. Terrell Law School. [Washington, DC]: Scurlock Studio, [1944]. Undated composite photograph measuring 11" x 13-1/2" (27.9 x 34.3 cm), with hand-lettered text, mounted on 14" x 17" (35.6 x 43.2 cm) illustration board. Toning and light soiling, chips, tears and creases to edges of board, upper and lower left corners creased, lower right corner lacking. A few tiny stains to photograph, which is otherwise fine. $1,500. A rare photographic record of the Robert H. Terrell Law School, an important historically Black institution established in Washington, DC, in 1931 after Howard University discontinued its evening law program. Named for Robert Heberton Terrell [1857-1925], a pioneering African American jurist and judge of the District of Columbia Municipal Court, the coeducational school provided opportunities for legal education to Black students during an era of widespread racial discrimination. Its graduates went on to careers in law, government and public service. Produced by the celebrated Scurlock Studio, one of Washington's foremost African American photographic establishments, this composite portrait depicts the school's founder and dean, George Arthur Parker, together with its six graduates of 1944, including one woman. The unusually small graduating class reflects the wartime circumstances affecting American legal education. The photograph is also a notable example of the work of the Scurlock Studio, which documented Washington's African American professional, political and cultural communities for much of the twentieth century. Of particular interest is the family connection to the desegregation of American legal education. Elwin Franklin Jarmon, Jr., son of the graduate pictured at lower left, was among the first six African American students admitted to the University of Texas School of Law in 1950, following the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Sweatt v. Painter, 339 U.S. 629 (1950). That decision, rejecting the adequacy of segregated legal education in Texas, was an important precursor to Brown v. Board of Education (1954). The portrait thus offers a connection between two generations of African American legal education and the strugg. Washington, DC: Scurlock Studio, [1944]. (ilustrador).…
